I just acquired an Xbox 360 and want to use it as a media center instead of my PS3. Is it at all possible to run XMBC off an external HD and boot to it when it's plugged into the 360? I just don't want to compromise the practical use of the system or Xbox Live.

There is no XBMC for Xbox360 at all, nor is there ever likely to be...
No there is no way. The only way you could (and that even takes a lot of time and patience) is if you JTAG the xbox 360 and install it as homebrew. But this would rended the xbox (as far as xbox live goes) useless. You could still play games and even like marketplace downloas but you will get banned as soon as you step onto xbox Live.
