I have no problem controlling an XP box in my basement using Remote Desktop from a laptop.

But as soon as I start up XBMC, it opens in a window, but then immediately closes again, never getting to the XBMC logo.

Any idea why?
If I recall correctly, XBMC will not work using Remote Desktop. Especially in full-screen mode. You'll need to switch to VNC or something else like that. Also be aware when using VNC, that in true full-screen mode the XBMC window will just show a black screen. You'll need to switch to windowed full-screen mode (look in setup) or just windowed.
You may find XBMC works in a TS session if you enable the setting "Use a fullscreen window instead of true fullscreen". However XBMC is not supported when running through RDP.

thanks for the responses.
I'll try VNC.

Yep. VNC is the solution, just need to hit '\' to exit xbmc fullscreen so you can drive it. That's what I use to make my changes remotely.
