I would like to make xbmc my one-stop shop for all my media needs on my ubuntu 10 desktop machine. I often use xbmc in fullscreen or windowed mode to watch media and it works great but there is one bit of functionality I can't use.

I need to use upnp for streaming my media and the server that comes with xbmc works great, however this requires that xbmc always be running. This wouldn't be an issue if the screen saver wasnt disabled, but my monitor just stays on, even when xbmc is in windowed mode.

Tried running xbmc in a vnc session as a workaround but it won't run due to lack of 3D acceleration.

Any suggestions?
Ok so I got the Vnc solution to work with virtualgl and turbo vnc. It all works well except that its pretty resource intensive and essentially cripples my old p4 laptop from doing other stuff even when xbmc is idle.

Still hoping that there's some obvious solution I'm missing.
