I just encountered the same issue. A search on the error message unearthed
this email thread which indicated it was a BIOS issue. Upgrading the BIOS on my computer fixed it for me. (I have an ASUS P5E-VM HDMI motherboard and I upgraded from BIOS version 0604 to 0709.)
Devs: the email thread also indicates that a workaround for this issue has been committed into the GRUB2 codebase.
