Ok thanks. One last question, does this work well with a server. I'm about to move my hdd and media over to a server but if it doesn't then I'll keep the tv shows in the htpc.

Thanks for everything!

Sorry it took so long to report back on this, but I was able to replace the VideoParser.py with your new version and now it works!!!! Thank you so much!
Hey, Jason, one quick feature request. Would it be possible, when the "coming up next..." comes up on screen, to give a kick to the file that is going to be read?

I've got my media collection spread over 6 different disks and I usually have to wait like four or five eons before the next episode starts playing.

Poking the file when the "coming up next" comes on screen would pre-spin up the disk so that the file is actually ready to play when the current one ends.

Anybody experiencing something like this? Any workaround you could suggest?

Nope...I've got 7 hard drives, with series spread around. No waiting for next show. Sounds like a problem with your setup.

There's no problem in his setup. He's just using a system (unRAID?) that spins down drives when not in use. It can take a few for the drive(s) to spin up and start playing the file.
Exactly, RockDawg. I'm using drivebender. It uses a sort of index with symlinks on the "main" hdd to pool all drives, and the others spin down because they're 5400rpm, power saving disks, that's it. Just regular windows power saving policy.
I can actually hear the disk spin up when an episode stops, then hear it clickity-clack for a while and then the new episode starts. This usually takes like 10+ seconds, and it's like ages when you're watching TV Smile
It doesnt seem likely that this is something that will get added to the addon, simply because its only a feature for rare cases and would be pointless for most users. However, if you want to add it yourself you could probably accomplish it pretty easily.

I know there is some function in the code that parses files for their runtime, you could just insert a call to that function in the function that pops up the "coming up next" box. It would be one line i think. Then the system will try and read the file header and wake the drive to do so. It should then stay awake for the 1 or 2 minutes between "coming up next" and the next episode playing.
Aww, this sucks. I could do it, of course, but I haven't the slightest idea where to put my hands to start with.
I can't believe there aren't enough people using pseudo-raid or pooling solutions (or just JBODs) to request that feature... Sad

Guess you could be right, but I am using Flexraid on my 5400rpm drives, and like I said, no delays.

There is a problem with his setup, a media server needs to have better management of its HDD spin down timer. PseudoTV runs on the idea that media is always available.

That being said, It wouldn't be hard to send a file request to the leading file in a playlist when the "coming up" prompt displays...

But honestly this problem falls on the side of the user... setup a longer idle time for the HDD or setup some cron or watchdog to wake drives when you're using XBMC...

There is nothing technically wrong with his system. Maybe it's configuration could be fine tuned in regards to hard drive spin down/spin up, but there is not necessarily any setting that's ideal. He may have 17 hard drives. If he has it set so that when one spins up they all spin up, it could solve his issue in PTY, but having them all spin up just to watch a single movie that's on a single drive is a waste. It's a matter of choice.

It all depends on how your system handles drive spin up/down. It could not even be enabled in which case all drives are always spinning. Or it could be enabled but it's spinning up all the drives when a single drive has activity. In either scenario you wouldn't have delay between shows as the drives are already spinning. Rest assured though if the drive the file is on is spun down, there will be a noticeable delay.

Do you like FlexRAID? I've been considering trying it out.
@ Rockdawg, you're missing the point... this isn't a problem related to PTV...

Whether he sets HDDs to sleep or not, still comes down to the fact that PTV isn't responsible for making sure his servers HDD are spun up and ready to server media....

I suggest he looks outside PTV for a solution ie (cron or watchdog) to wake or pre spin his HDD...

That was the point I was making, BTW I never said anything was wrong with his system... just his configuration...
Whoa, hold right there Smile
Of course I know that a media center is supposed to run on online data, but this setup also includes a NAS, download managers, ftp and so on.
Always up, I end up using XBMC like two hours a day, that's why I spin down disk when not using them. It's nearline data for the other services, after all.

That said, I know there are other system to keep the disks up, and ***OF COURSE*** it's not a problem with PseudoTV. I just thought there was quite a handful of people using my kind of setup (or similar) and this kind of feature was quite easy to implement and could be useful the aforementioned handful of people, that's it.

Of course it takes a second to set up event ghost to do that. Smile
