Hi Guys

I am looking for a remote to use with my xbmc live install.

It has to be easy to use as this is for the whole family. I have trained them on the use of xbmc on the XBOX and they are comfortable in using it, but they are used to using the XBOX DVD remote.

So what is the best remote to use with the latest rendition of xbmc. I have a Zotac running fine at the moment, just missing the remote to finalise it.

I purchased a USB to XBOX adapter cable that allows me to plug in the XBOX DVD remote IR receiver, but that did not work straight up so I am searching on what needs to be done to get it working (if you know please post the link for me), but is this the best remote to use?

Is there a remote that was specifically thought of when the IR coding was done?

Thanks

Mick
See http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Control_Reviews

Live has built in support for Microsoft compatible remotes (aka eHome or RC6 remotes) so any full Microsoft compatible will work. Note that the cheap end of the MCE remote market usually isn't fully compatible.

Thanks - that was a good link.

I want something that will work out of the box preferably so I will follow up those leads on the RC6 remotes.

This remote has been mentioned a few times - will it work straight out of the box

personally i use this remote

installed using this tutorial

it was super simple to install. i have the usb mounted internally with the IR sensor obviously through the case.

it does not work OOB obviously but is simple to install in linux. windows i believe it works OOB. regardless, power off/resume from standby work fine with my mobo.

I suggest you keep your XBOX remote and get it to work.
In my case I hacked the existing cables to add USB (see this link) and this got very good Wife Acceptance (as she was used to the XBOX). I am using "real" Ubuntu CDs with XBMC on top, so your mileage may vary with XBMC Live.

Almost free, environment-friendly and what a nice tribute to the XBOX to keep the remove!

I recommend using a wireless xbox 360 controller with an receiver.

Does the XBOX 360 reciever work with the XBOX 1 remote?

I use a URC MX810 and URC R6 (OTB all keys work) remotes and I consider them the best. They just are heavy duty remotes, not fragile and the key depresses are firm. battery life on the URC R6 is excellent (6+ months). I like the original xbox 1 remote for its layout with the the info, menu, guide and exit/back button keys surronding the select and cursor keys. It is the best layout for xbmc period for one hand ease of use.

Edit: Hell for 11 dollars shipped I will try it.

+1 for this approach. I did the same thing, and while I think there are probably better remotes with more programmable keys, this approach cost me nothing, and has the advantage, that it keeps working like my old xbox had.

I followed different instructions.

I found the wiki very helpful in choosing a remote control.
i'm using the asrock remote. Very satisfied.

I have the original xbox remote as well, which works perfectly, but i like this one better, just because it looks more slick.Laugh
So I bought a Netgear NeoTV and it has a remote that I like the layout of - better than the MCE remotes that I have seen.

Is there a way to learn these buttons and assign them to an action?

I am assuming that lirc is running somewhere in there so it should be possible.

Does the IR receiver matter at all or should I be able to use any of the ones that I currently have
