I'm currently using Ubuntu on my HTPCs, and I've disabled the desktop effects in gnome to avoid tearing and disturbance when watching videos in XBMC.

Does Kubuntu have these problems, as well? I assume if you enable Compiz in Kubuntu, these problems will appear, but does it apply when using Kwin?

This is a general problem with nvidia and when the composite extension is used.

I would by no means understand the technical reasons why but just curious if this is ever going to be resolved or some kind of fundamental incompatibily?

It's been the case for a while, so much so that it's almost a mantra: "Disable desktop effects...Disable desktop effects..."

Blame nvidia, there's nothing we can do about it.
