Full Version: Add External Harddisk Library to Windows 7

Dear all

I have searched, but didn't find a solution to my problem.

I do have a Dell Zino 410 HD with Windows 7 64bit. I do connect a FAT-formatted Harddisk with some movies on it (.mkv, .avi., .mp4 etc.).

I would like to "integrate" those movies, so I can watch them and their infos, like I had previously with my AppleTV.
I can see the Harddisk in File-Manager and choose it as the primary source.
I can see the videos (and play them) using "Video", but I only see a list f the movies and no background info, movie poster and such.
I can NOT see the usual "Movie" Tag on the left.
I can NOT choose to see it in preferences (it's blacked-out or red).
What do I do wrong? Must be simple but I spend already more then 4 hours and rebooted, reformatted, etc. several times.

I need your help please

thank you so much!!

cheers

It sounds as if you haven't scanned the videos into your library.

JR
Scan the videos?
How do I do this please?

All I remember from my AppleTV is, I have to locate the external drive and then when I say "import library" it will scan everything automatically.
But this "import library" seems not to work, although it sees the HD...

Any help please?

Somehow I have the feeling it's something very small I overlook, but with all the Wiki, Manuals and everything, I cannot find it Sad
As jhsrennie said you have to scan your movies into library

If each movie isn't in its own folder then you don't need to check "use folder names for lookups" as in the video you can also leave scan recursively checked if you want an explanation of each your find it here

Thank you very much, the video made it very clear and it worked out fine Smile
But I had to allocate the external Harddisk again, with the previously assigned "path" it was apparently not working to "scan" again...
But I am happy now Smile
Dear all

I have a new problem! Regarding the same subject.

I did recently add more movies to this Harddisk, repowered the system and the HD and waited for the automated scan to take place...but nothing happened.
I then added the HD again to the system as described above, but that didn't help.
Which small step am I missing now? Wink
I am sure it's again just a little button I didn't press and I would be very thankful if someone could quickly help me.

thanks ina advance!

cheers

I found that when using an external hard drive it was easier for me to create a junction or symlink to the external drive and use that as the library source.

I think the command under win 7 is
Code:
mklink /D <external drive>
but google it to make sure.
Thanks for the reply

unfortunately some problems with these "symlinks" and the recent release of Xbmc:

What I will try, is to "delete" the current HD and rescan everything again.
Not the most elegant solution and certainly not if I have to do this every couple of weeks, but if no one else has a quick-tip, I'm screwed Wink

I will also try an eSATA HD this weekend to see how this performs and if maybe the problems go away with this one...

I thought that error was with symlinks and FTP rather than with smb or a local drive.

I must admit I haven't tried symlinking to FTP but did have junctions working under XP to a local drive.
