I just jailbroke the ATV2 and installed XBMC. I am really very happy with this. I put this in a friends house in a bedroom that has an HDMI TV.

They also want movies in their living room where they have a rear projection with only component video.

I initially went out and got a WDTV Live Hub. But its not XBMC!!! and whilst you may think that you can live without XBMC, the truth is that you can't.

So since ATV2 can only output HDMI, is there an alternative unit out there, that is not an XBOX, that can host XBMC.

Thanks.
ATV1 on ebay, install Linux on it and it would do 1080p with ease
Though the ATV1 would need a crystalHD decoder card to do 1080p.
Yeah, atv1 + crystal hd == 1080p

Sorry, I just assumed that everyone was aware of that
I went in the end with WiiMC. Really quite impressed; the interface is of course awful, but...

1. It works with composite cables
2. Works off my movies database
3. Quick to load movies.
4. No additional expense.
5. If your wii is already cracked, then it is very very easy to setup.
6. Zero maintenance.

WiiMC represents a cheap introduction (if they have Wii) to the world of a media centre, before they fork out on hardware.

My 2 cents.
You can also use an HDMI to Component converter which will allow you to use the appletv 2 on an older tv.
