Full Version: Locating missing movie files

Hi,

I've tried a lot to find a solution or work around to this for a while but to no avail.

I had a xbmc setup, with hundreds of movies and episodes, which was all (anally) perfect until a hard drive failure wiped everything out.
Thankfully, I had made a backup of some of the movies (about half) a while back and the entire xbmc library a day before the hard drive failure, so those are showing up just fine in xbmc again now. Obviously it cant find the ones which I haven't replaced.

What I would like to be able to do now is check which entries in xbmc cannot find a file, and thus, which movies I will have to go and download again.

I would really appreciate any help you could give me that would avoid going through a text file with hundreds of title and manually checking if i have them.

Thanks a lot.

Running latest xbmc on windows 7
Sorry for your loss... (curiosity asks me how many 'roundabout' did you lose?) Maybe using 3rd party software like ember, might help. I think it outputs to a list. Inevitably at one point you'll have two lists, and need some sort of comparison exclusion script.

Someone said.. it's cheaper and faster to mail a HD than to download given the size.
export your lib as a single file. The xml file will the contents of your missing media files
Thanks for the replies.

@djashjones

I've exported my library to a single file and cant find any evidence of missing files in there. I
For example, I know I have lost leathel weapon but the following is the entry in the xml file for it.

I've edited it down just so the post isn't too big but there seems to be nothing to indicated the media can't be found.

if you try to play it xbmc will say it does not exist and do wish to remove it from the library.

i kinda had this issue too but different, lol.

That's kind of the opposite of my problem.

You had movie files with no xbmc enteries, whereas I have xbmc entries with no movie files.

What I would like to find is any script exists that will export a list of files that xbmc cannot locate
yes i know but like i said. if you try to play a movie that does not exist xbmc will tell you and ask if you want to remove it from your database.

If you go and clean your library it will remove the entries of the movies that dont exist anymore.
Sorry. Like I said in the original post, what I want is a list of files so that I know which movies I have to go and download again. If I clean my library, I will erase all evidence that the entries were ever there.

One solution may be if I could find out what xbmc does with xml files for movies it cant find when you export to separate files.

Obviously, when it finds the folder and avi file for example, it puts the xml, fanart etc in there but what happens these files when it cant find the folder?
that xml file from when you exported your library holds the movies that xbmc thinks it has. (list A). you need to make a list of the actual movies you do have (list B).

Compare the 2 lists and the missing ones will tell what you need to download.
Re-Reading the last bit of messages, it came to mind that it's possible a re-scrape update has improperly labelled a title... the movie might exist but under a new name. I often get oriental movies with english names.. renamed back to the oriental name if I re-scrape.
