It is not based on A10 but with Mali 400 and an external Wi-Fi antenna

Does anyone know if the ARM proprietary Mali drivers are usable? or do you need to compile them on a purchased, licensed, SDK/IDE platform?

I'm a little suss on the Rhombus project as they are aiming for 100% GNU, which means time and compromises. Rhombus team also are developing on substandard releases of Linux. Any dev should be on latest, preferably Ubuntu 12.04 which has the greatest ARM features and repositories, even if it needs trimming. Why the hell Ubuntu 10.04 or other ancient OS releases. Simply Crazy.

Because "Unity" sucks donkey @%& *, that's why. With Ubuntu 10.04 you still have the Gnome 2.xx desktop, which makes sense on a large screen and allows you to get right at your apps and out of the way otherwise. Who wants to type a bunch of commands to launch an application?

Depends; Do you want 2D & 3D support at the framebuffer? Then yes, for free. Do you want 2D & 3D support at the X11 window manager? Then no, you need mali DDK licensed software.

About 10.04

The ubuntu release is more a proof of concept, not a real release like everybody thinks. I think rootstock is not supported anymore after 10.04, and I think they used rootstock to create the rootfs.

J1nx, i'm just wondering if we put ubuntu + xbmc on it, do we really need the 3d acceleration if we were to use a very lightweight skin, like the one you posted about. ?

I'm assuming that the 3d acceleration isn't really needed for Video playback ?

We don't really need Ubuntu if it comes to XBMC. XBMC can be run on the framebuffer, so a very minimalistic rootfs such as busybox with the proper libraries and drivers is enough. XBMC would love to use the MALI for drawing the GUI, but indeed the video decoding has nothing to do with the MALI at all.

This is how the RPi and Raspbmc builds work, and is the way forward for ARM devices. Hence even other x86 system can work like that. OpenELEC is basically; Kernel, driver, busybox, libraries and XBMC

Guess I need to start learning Linux fast. You make it sound easy, but I'm guessing it's very complicated.

RE: Allwinner A10 : Is XBMC ported to MALI-400MP ? - d1dd1 - 2012-06-12

Well if they release an image like for the rPI you don't need much linux skills.
Just flash the image to an SD card plug it in and it directly boots into XBMC.
[That's the RPI version, I don't know how the progress is here, so it probably won't be so easy in the first releases]

The only thing is manual editing config files, you probably need to connect with ssh to edit them. But there is nothing complicated here.

Personally as much as I like some of the heavier skins I find myself using xTV-SAF and Quartz these days. Does anyone know if these two will perform well on these devices?

Ask the question in the Rpi topic. If it runs nicely or just about nicely then yes, it will run nicely at the A10 as well. When you are at it. Ask them to checkout the Lightbox skin as well.

Do anyone know that the efforts for working Mali400 under linux are usable for Mali450 as well or a totally different works will be needed?

Ask again in 2013 when it is actually made and released.

RE: Allwinner A10 : Is XBMC ported to MALI-400MP ? - Ribuck - 2012-06-12

Yeah and i believe it will be a different architecture, so unlikely that the driver will for the mali400 will work.
