Thanks! - karifsmith - 2009-02-22 majorheadache Wrote:I do have audio on the optical S/PDIF output, but only for digital sources, like movies with AC3 soundtracks. MP3s and movies with simple stereo soundtracks have no audio on either the HDMI or the optical. I just installed XBMC via this guide and I'm using the Asus P5N7A-VM mobo. I'm using the optical output for audio and sending that to my receiver. Audio worked great for me and then all of a sudden it stopped working on analog sources. I tried what tslayer posted here and so far audio has been working just fine again: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=35901#postmenu_209655 Hope that helps with your first problem! - karifsmith - 2009-02-22 I am trying to do this step of the guide: Enable eject button of your ODD but when I open /etc/sysctl.conf I do not see a line that says #dev.cdrom.lock=0 Here is what my /etc/sysctl.conf file looks like: http://pastebin.com/m72396b44 Any ideas? Thanks - olympia - 2009-02-22 karifsmith Wrote:I am trying to do this step of the guide: I think you have sata odd device. I just wasn't sure if it is something that I needed to do. - olympia - 2009-02-22 karifsmith Wrote:Yes, I have a SATA ODD. The eject via XBMC works as is (without adding that line to the file). Is it works from the eject menu or also by pressing the eject button on the drive itself? - karifsmith - 2009-02-22 olympia Wrote:Is it works from the eject menu or also by pressing the eject button on the drive itself? Eject from XBMC menu works however it does not Load if the tray is out and I select Eject. Eject/Load on the drive itself works. - majorheadache - 2009-02-22 karifsmith Wrote:I just installed XBMC via this guide and I'm using the Asus P5N7A-VM mobo. There is no blinking cursor, no text saying what user/folder I am in. The keyboard works -- I can type letters etc, but nothing executes. Is this normal? Do I follow tslayers instructions using SSH? olympia Wrote:How did you set up your audio in XBMC? My sound settings are exactly the same. I have tried setting the S/PDIF to HDMI but then I get no sound at all. - majorheadache - 2009-02-22 FWIW, I was able to get it fixed but since I tried two methods, I'm not sure which one worked. First I ran /usr/bin/iecset audio on and then speaker-test -c 2 I didn't hear anything, but maybe I didn't have it turned up enough. I was not in the same room with the HTPC. The output seemed normal: Code: speaker-test 1.0.19 But since I didn't hear anything, I tried the tslayer method. Again, I didn't hear anything but this time the output looked bad: Code: Playback device is default Now I was discouraged. I tried to start XBMC (which I admit, I'm not exactly sure how to do. I went to my XBMC folder and typed xbmc ENTER. (keep in mind, all this is using SSH) The output looked like this: Code: xbmc@HTPC:~/XBMC$ xbmc So, I just tried rebooting it and now all the sound works. I have yet to try it using HDMI, but that's next. \ I am also having a display issue which I will describe in another post. no "non digital" sound - typhoe - 2009-02-23 Hi, thank you for this great how to. I was previously using xbmc on a "standard" hardy install. To get sound (both analog and digital) using the spdif pass-through to my AV receiver, I had to use a .asoundrc file: --- pcm.!default { type plug slave.pcm "softvol" } pcm.forcerate { type plug slave { pcm "iec958" #pcm "hw:0,1" rate 48000 format S32_LE } } pcm.softvol { type softvol slave { pcm "forcerate" } control { name "Master" card 0 } } --- Now, with your method, on an intrepid "basic" install, I had digital sound directly, but no more analog... I found the solution using tslayer method to test my card. I have to keep the .asoundrc file with pcm.!default spdif in it to get both analog and digital ouput. I tested it by issuing the following command: kill $(pgrep xbmc.bin) ; echo 'pcm.!default spdif' > $HOME/.asoundrc ; speaker-test -c 2 I got sound from the speaker, but when I removed the .asoundrc file and restarted xbmc, I was stuck again. Keeping the file resolved my problem. --- 22:44:48 T:3053438784 M:1943359488 NOTICE: Starting XBMC, Platform: GNU/Linux. I could table that for now though in favor of fixing my graphics situation. Originally my screen was crystal clear, no jaggies or anything, all pretty! Now it looks upscaled or something. When booting, the first pulsating XBMC logo looks very smooth, but the "X" and the following XBMC logo look "grainy". It reminds me of watching a DVD on the xbox without the "blend" on. I took a few pictures to hopefully help illustrate what I'm talking about. and In XBMC I have the resolution set to 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz which is my projectors native resolution. The only clue I have is from my above post when I tried to start xbmc and it said Code: xbmc@HTPC:~/XBMC$ xbmc But I don't know if I'm even starting XBMC properly there. I suspect it would be useful to turn off the startup graphics because maybe it is displaying error messages I can't see, but I don't know how to do that. - majorheadache - 2009-02-23 It occurs to me that maybe it has to do with the xorg.conf file. In my initial setup I went ahead and implemented this, "If you want your Xorg autodetect the native resolutions from EDID and want to use 24p you have to replace your xorg.conf..." So now my xorg.conf file looks like this: http://www.majorheadache.com/xorg.conf.txt So I need to find the settings for a Mitsubishi HC5000 1080P projector. If I find working settings I'll post back here. - olympia - 2009-02-23 majorheadache Wrote:It occurs to me that maybe it has to do with the xorg.conf file. You have 2 screen section, this can be a problem. - majorheadache - 2009-02-23 olympia Wrote:You have 2 screen section, this can be a problem. Actually, thats just a bad copy and paste from nano, sorry. I have corrected that. There is only one screen section. It should be simply whatever is at http://217.20.138.65/xbmc/xorg.conf plus whatever modifications are made to it by the installation process. - olympia - 2009-02-23 majorheadache Wrote:Actually, thats just a bad copy and paste from nano, sorry.
