RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - spencers - 2012-11-10

Anandtech got their hands on it... They said $300-320; newegg/amazon by December.

Looks like a worthy replacement to my Acer Revo 1600.

I may have to pick up the gigabit version when it hits the stores.

Isn't this better?

Not really, especially when you take into account zotac puts out horribly engineered products that consistently fail. That thing is already racking up poor reviews due to improper cooling (something zotac has done for years...) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856173037

+1......what considered better isn't always the spec of the CPU/iGPU.....it's the overall build quality that matter most.....

I think the NUC here is better, but I don't agree with that assessment of Zotac. I've had two different motherboards from them and loved them, and a lot of their miniPCs are great products. To each his own, I guess.

There is bad apple on every tree, and it is no different in electronics......some Zotac are very good. I build a PC for a friend using Zotac mobo, and he never have any issue with it. As long as you don't buy it from Fry's Electronics by i10, it should be fine. I bought a mobo from Fry's Electronics one time. They rewrapped it, and sold it to me as new. It's terrible....

How is this expensive? This isn't your run of the mill PC with an atom or AMD cpu. This is a full fledged Ivy Bridge (albeit mobile) cpu with HD 4000 iGPU in a proprietry form factor that's about the smallest PC you can with those specs. It's an amazing price point if you ask me.

Don't forget you have to buy the ram and a m-SATA HDD (or use USB flash stick).. -gh

I'm surprised to hear Zotacs are bad. Maybe I should toss the 3 I have that have performed flawlessly for years?

When shopping at Frys there are some rules:
1. If it's been repackaged don't buy it.
2. All mother boards are repackaged.

They repacked it so well....I cannot tell by looking at the box till I saw the inside of the box…the screw holes have been tempered and they left some thermo grease on the board too....

That's the reason for rule #2. Wink
