No, manually installed addons will not auto update ever for security reasons. This feature is not specific to AppleTV.

Thank you very much for the quick response.

How far away from a proper release with working 4K HDR etc are we? Just to get an idea if it's worth to get/upgrade my dedicated Kodi device in the meantime if it still takes half or a maybe full year?

(this is in NO way meant as a "why does it take so long" post, just to make this clear)

No timeframe

The expectation is to deliver the same feature set that Kodi does for the AppleTV4/4K, that supports topshelf, the siri remote and fits in well with the tvOS experience.

The team are currently tackling the major items (let's call these the `big rocks` e.g. binary addons, storage etc.) and they understand what these are. We even understand what the medium sized rocks (e.g. refresh rates etc.) are and we'll need these too before we have something that we can provide test builds for. Once we begin to provide test builds this is when the community can help with figuring out what's left to tackle (i.e. the little rocks). If we provide test builds before this time we will be inundated with reports of things that don't work that we already know about Wink. We hope you guys, our users understand this, the support burden would be immense if we provide early access builds before we deem them ready.

Thanks to @Memphiz for his work on which the majority of this is based on and to @davilla from MrMc for all their support. Thanks to @sy6sy2 for getting the tooling up and running and @kambala and @Fuzzard for contributing the lion's share of the work so far.

For those of you that are brave enough you can try to build this yourself (tvOS Build), but please bear in mind this is not ready for mainstream and the more time the team speed build questions the less time spent on getting it ready for Kodi 19!

Note: there are site's online selling Kodi 19 for tvOS, they are just re-selling (an outdated version of) what the team are working on. Please don't expect support for tvOS until it's officially launched with (hopefully) Kodi 19.

Will there be an option to test Kodi using TestFlight on the Apple TV? I would really like to help and test it that way.

No. The same reasons we can't have Kodi on iOS store affect tvos.

The primary known blocker is the use of opengles.we were told by Apple that as of a date (can't remember when, but it's passed) store submissions for new apps would not be accepted if they used the OpenGLes framework.
The other big unknown that Apple reps couldn't confirm was our use of the plugin system. Essentially we were told, try a submission and we will see how review goes, they couldn't say whether it would be accepted or not, as at the time the rep wasnt aware of any apps that would put a certain condition of their t&c's to a test around plugin style usage.

No, being able to use TestFlight would be predicated on Kodi being available in the App Store which is not a path the team wish to take with Kodi.

Decisions on when and how we release and update kodi today is with the team. To go to the App Store would mean it would be at the behest of Apple and not something we would have the capacity to support.

That's too bad, but understandable. Thank you for the reply.

I see this was last updated years ago.  Kodi for TVos is not happening?   What a bummer!  I just purchased an Apple TV to see how its different than my new Onn 4k Pro box.    So far the best part about ATV is its pairing to my airpods for listening while traveling.  The worst part is Plex on it only allows 10 second skipping, how rude is that...                   I am on Kodi 21.

Kodi was released for tvos a couple of releases ago. But you need to sideload it.

Then you would have to get an paid Apple developer account, so you can sideline it. Otherwise you would have to load it every 7days. That is horrible in my opinion.

Infuse is a really good alternative for the Apple TV. It works really well. Only thing I am missing is a connection with TVHeadend. Kodi has a nice addon for it.

RE: tvOS Update as a new platform for Kodi - BigBillSD - 2024-08-17

I am testing Infuse and it sees my plex backend and adds a choice of 30 second skip ahead which plex for apple doesn't have for who knows why.  The developers got back to me many months ago saying why would anyone need more than a 10 second skip... (although for google tv they have 30 second skips)

Its hard to imagine that the coders from SageTV were just so far advanced twenty years ago that today, in 2024 most tv front ends seem broken by comparison.  UGH.  -Bill

RE: tvOS Update as a new platform for Kodi - BigBillSD - 2024-08-18

Yeah, reloading that app every 7 days, or even at all is a show stopper in all senses of the word.  I am testing Infuse right now.  Hey, it has a 30 second skip!  And has a few other adjustments.  Seems very odd the developers wouldn't just allow us to make the forward and reverse skips any length like sage did in the early 2000's    When watching US Football I always change the forward skip to somewhere between 22-25 seconds so we don't have to listen to all the off the cuff color commentary that is so annoying.  Almost worse than commercials.  Kodi has a lot of choices and I read that there is a file to edit that would allow me to add other times to the picklist.    One odd thing I have noticed with the skip pick-list is it is reversed -30 goes forward 30 and +30 goes backward 30 seconds.  Seems odd, but maybe its a cultural thing with the devs.     -Bill

You would think it would be simpler for them to code to just have a place to change the skips to on the fly.  Maybe even a popup associated with a button on the remote.  Sure wish I could still code, gave that up when I didn't need to code in Clipper Summer 87 anymore.   Geez, that was a Long time ago.

Care to explain a bit more?

RE: tvOS Update as a new platform for Kodi - BigBillSD - 2024-08-18

I go into Settings  Player  Skip Steps,   Click on the listing and chose -30 (turns from Yellow to White) and then chose (+)10 there is no plus sign (same color change)   That gets me 30 second skip forward and 10 second skip backwards.   When I did it 30 and -10 it only went forward 10 seconds,  changed it to -30 and it skips 30 seconds forward.  My thinking says -30 would go backwards 30 seconds.  But it goes forward 30 seconds.

So I have to set it to -30 and positive 10 so it does the opposite,  forward 30 back 10.

Using the newest release.  -Bill

Kind of reminds me when I ask my wife how much gas she has she will reply 3/4 empty...  Most folks say 1/4 full.... or a 1/4 tank.
