I kinda thought the home menu was perfect as it is. Smile

- Galefury - 2010-11-13

I kinda agree. Nod But as long as the "old" home menu stays this way, I don't mind what other home menus are added.

tungmeister Wrote:Personally I prefer the other implementation as I like the sub-menus and well the entire layout. I also liked the thoughts on methods of displaying add-ons.
Yeah, the add-ons would need a place too. I think though (and that goes for both concepts) it would be best to have one central place for the add-ons, instead of spread out over the various menu categories. Or maybe using the favourites script for that, like mcborzu suggested.

Rad_ Wrote:I think this is much more in tune with the rest of your skin than the earlier mockup. I wasn't fond of the earlier one (mostly because it felt out of place), but am very drawn to this one. I'm still a bit at odds with the explicit movies/shows/videos items since one of the most defining aspects and first things you notice about your skin is that they're nested under one entry on the main menu, but I understand how the recently added stuff adds a level of complexity to the issue.... I have no doubt you'll get it perfectly in the end, though.... You never cease to amaze. Thanks tons for the time and effort.
I prefer to have a central video entry, it makes sense as it's consistent with how it's done hierarchically for music. But you're right the recently added stuff kind of needs the movie and tvshow categories. It's a trade-off, like always Smile

Stranger Wrote:I don't think Submenu's are out of the question! you could easily (nicely) have submenu's appear (animated) on a double down displayed just over the top of the recently added items (with a nice blue fade/gradient just like the one in the back of the first concept)

starcitysecrets Wrote:maybe the submenus could be accessed by pressing up, so the submenu's are above? and then by pressing down you can access the recently added. i agree that weather and settings should be minimal. perhaps you could put current conditions and a settings button at the bottom right where its out of the way but still visible?

Both good suggestions, I think I would prefer putting the submenu at the top since then you would need to "skip" the submenu when going to the recently added. Something else to keep in mind is that the original home menu did not provide a submenu access to genres, actors and such either. And I probably wouldn't use them myself. For me the submenu is mainly important to get to recently added in my library, which I use all the time. It's what a homescreen needs to do imo, provide access to the most used items, not necessarily all possible destinations.

Another option would be make the submenus take the place of the main menu when a main menu entry is clicked. The default first entry for the submenu would always be to go to the main menu's item (eg movies) so if you just want to go to movie titles it would mean performing a double click, and if you want to refine your choice you scroll throught the submenu and click on what you want.

I'll start coding the new concept and see if I can come up with something that combines the best of both.

The current homescreen is definitely not going anywhere Wink

This has to be the best way, sounds exactly like it should look.

i actually love the new menu, looking at the new one it makes the old feel a bit weird.

like its to much stuff going on 1 side of the picture. The new feels a bit more balanced, i like it alot.

Keep up the hella good work Smile and LESS is more.

crudely edited paintjob

Image

the weather at the bottom is selectable along with settings

No please dont do it like that, it gets to cluttered fast. Leave the settings on the FAR LEFT on top. and place the weather with the clock.

I kinda like sub menus (generes the most), but not if they ruin the skin like that. i know its just a mockup, but god so much text at once.

Ofcourse, you could have a sub menu, like if you press movies, you get a new list with titles generes etc, but i kinda dont like submenu after submenu either.

Or you could when you press up when you are movies, exchange tvshows, videos categories with actually movie submenus (like titles, generes etc) and keep the movie category, but exchange all the others. I hate explaining in a language that is not my main :/

Jeroen, I've just find that in episode view when I use my switch button to change view there is one view that show nothing, of course this view is not accesible from menu but activated by the Container.NextViewMode function.

I like where you going with this but i feel like the thumbs are to big. Almost half of the fanart is covered now. I think if your shrunk the thumbs down a some it would be perfect. I also like starcitysecrets idea about pressing "up" for sub menus.

Yes but your suggestion has other consequences either more thumbs same spacing lower menu items or three thumbs large spacing

Suggestions are easy design is hard Wink

Nice work Jeroen haven't had a look for a while looking good Smile

Well lowered menu items and thumbs is kinda what i was suggesting since i felt the large thumbs made everything cover up to much of the fanart. Jeroen do you think 5 smaller thumbs with the about the same spacing would look too cluttered? I know im not the one putting in all the hours and hard work so its totally up to you obviously. Just a friendly suggestion. Smile

In any case the alternate homescreen is still at a concept stage at the moment. Although the first concept is actually coded it's not final and I still have other ideas to explore. It will be part of 0.9.x in some shape or form.

First I want to get 0.8.9.5 out of the door, as I originally planned to release that last weekend but didn't make it. That's supposed to be the last 0.8 update so I can move on to bigger plans in 0.9.

I also want to start on PVR support for 0.9. I'll be posting the general plans for 0.9 soon.

- starcitysecrets - 2010-11-16

can't wait for it Jeroen, I think most people understand that the new homescreen won't be coming for a while. Hope the new update comes out soon Smile

hehe no not really. I hardly ever do mockups. I just got an el cheapo usb tuner and after pulling out some hairs I finally got it working with xbmc/mp tv server. Don't know how I managed to get it working, it just did all of a sudden Laugh

So no work has been done on it yet, but I can't wait to start on it Smile
