~54mm - 9.5mm (SSD) = ~44.5mm for CPU cooler
~54mm - 25.4mm (3.5" HDD) = ~28.6mm for CPU cooler

These numbers correspond to my testing as well so I have confirmed them.

If you think the E-i5 is tight, I have the E-i3 now also. It's 15mm shorter. A 2.5" SSD is a tight fit against a 28mm Dynatron K199. I don't know how they can advertise that it fits a 3.5" HDD but that's another story...

Thanks for your extra effort to clarify the problem Laugh

If I weren't so lazy and got around to creating the FAQ there would be no problem .... Smile

Hi Dougie Fresh!

I wanted to write a pm, but "Dougie Fresh has reached their private message quota so your message could not be sent."

Well, what I wanted: you wrote that 2.5" SSD is a tight fit against a 28mm cooler in your E-i3 case.
What kind of cpu/mb do you use ? I'm just curious how strong cpu can be used in that tight place w/o overheating...
And I suppose your sdd is 12,5mm max. What do you think a 15mm hdd can fit yet with the 28mm cooler?

Thanks a lot!

Here's a picture of the gap between a 9.5mm SSD and the top of the Dynatron K199 28mm cooler. This is using a Intel DH61AG motherboard.

There's small gap there maybe 1-2 mm. I don't know precisely though. I don't think anything bigger than the standard 9.5mm SSD is going to fit. The K199 is a side-blowing cooler so there's no worry about airspace over the top of it.

I think for AMD the Gelid Slim Silence a-Plus would work here with one 2.5" HDD or SSD since you can install it to one side or the other so just a small part of the fan will be obscured by the SSD.

RE: Realan E-I5 A6-3500 build - pszab - 2012-12-01

What a fast answer!!!
It seems that there isn't 5-6mm. I don't know either how they can advertise that it fits a 3.5" HDD. A bigger 2.5" hdd is too big, not a 3.5".. :-o

Thanks!

What an amazing post... really.
It changed completely the idea i had in my mind in the beggining...

But I also need your help.
I found in my country a case from the same vendor, but instead of E-I5, is the E-Q5. Below you have the details:

http://www.itxcase.net/product_E-Q5.html

Well, the configuration given by jangjong seems perfect to me.
I just want it for watching movies and checking a couple of webs. No games, or heavy stuff.

I know that in the I5, a 3.5"HDD is not the best idea. But i saw that the Q5 is a bit taller, so i wonder what do you think about using the 3.5" in this other case. Maybe the air flows better, and i can get a bigger fan also.
What fan would you recommend me that fits in the space?

Thanks to all the experts from this forum!

RE: Realan E-I5 A6-3500 build - Dougie Fresh - 2012-12-10

Some considerations:

The E-Q5 is only 5mm taller than the E-i5 and it doesn't have vents on the top. Heat in that case is a known issue. If you use a 3.5" HDD, you'll need to forego the optical drive. Looking at the E-Q5 sitting next to me, I believe you can install a 1 x 50mm fan vs. the E-i5 you can install up to 4 x 40mm fans.

IMHO, having used all these cases, the only one really suitable for a 3.5" HDD is the E-i7 and that's again without using the optical drive.

RE: Realan E-I5 A6-3500 build - luiso_777 - 2012-12-10

Thanks for the quick answer.
Seems clear to me.

I can't find the E-i7 in Spain.
Would you suggest a similar model from any other brand that i could build this configuration with the 3.5"?

I really dont mind the optical drive indeed...

Thanks again.

There is a vendor in the UK: http://www.ebay.es/itm/Black-e-Mini-i7-E-i7-HTPC-Mini-ITX-Slim-PC-Case-with-120W-Internal-PSU-Board-/120985945970 and the one on this thread ships to Spain http://www.ebay.es/itm/E-i7-HTPC-mini-itx-desktop-computer-case-with-power-supply-/251095504948.

Also, Streacom makes a similar line of cases. I don't know if there is a dealer in Spain or on the continent.

Much apreciated Dougie!!

I will try then! Smile

Thanks a lot

RE: Realan E-I5 A6-3500 build - luiso_777 - 2012-12-11

I found a reseller that can send to Spain different models of Realan.

And i think that with the E-Q7, i will not have problems at all for my 3.5" HD, even better than with the I7

E-Q7
http://www.minicase.net/product_E-Q7.html

I guess this can be the perfect option right?
What do you think can be the optimum fan for a right temperature?

Thanks again.

I have the E-Q7 as well and it's a nice model. I have a prototype version with the black faceplate (which you could make your self simply by getting some spraypaint for plastic). I think I posted a picture of it in a thread somewhere but no idea where! It takes an 80mm fan and if you are using a optical drive you'll either want to find a thin 80mm fan for it so the cables from the optical drive don't interfere with the fan or make sure you have all right-angle connectors. The power connector on the power supply is not right angle so you'll need an adapter or do like I did and use a cable tie to bend it over (gently). I have an Enermax 80mm fan in mine.

Enjoy the E-Q7!

RE: Realan E-I5 A6-3500 build - luiso_777 - 2012-12-11

Well... If you have the E-Q7... then i bet it's for a good reason Smile
So i'll go for it!

i couldnt find your post, but i will take another chance tomorrow, I wanna see how it looks.

I also found this Enermax of 80mm.

http://www.amazon.es/Enermax-UCCL8-0-5-Blanco-2000/dp/B001DXWDLM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1355252669&sr=8-3

Should it be fine?

RE: Realan E-I5 A6-3500 build - Dougie Fresh - 2012-12-11

I don't know that one, I use the ENERMAX UC-8EB. If you don't mind spending the money for it, the Noctua 80mm fan on amazon.es is a very quiet fan.

RE: Realan E-I5 A6-3500 build - hasslehogg - 2013-02-21

Hi Dougie

I bought the case from you and followed your build and bought identical parts in the original thread. I am having problems though, I cannot get any video from the mobo/cpu either by vga or hdmi. I dont have a seperate gfx card, I only want to use the onboard from the cpu, but get nothing.

The light powers on and the fan spins, but nothing happens on my monitor. I have unplugged and reseated everything, reset the CMOS and even returned the mobo and cpu to amazon and they sent out replacements and again same problem.

Do you have any idea what this could be, could you possibly tell me how you setup, did you use a PCI gfx card 2st to get into bios and then change settings in bios to enable CPU gfx? i have setup multiple machines throughout the years, but have never came across this

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as i am tearing my hair out here
thanks

Michael
