Suggest you hit the unRAID hardware forum to get advice on this, that's the best place to go for up to date hardware information for unRAID.

Literally the first result on Google on the query "unraid forum" gave this:
http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php

There is a "Hardware" subforum there...

Yeah, I have seen that forum, but I was unsure whether the reference to the "unraid forum" was a reference to an unraid forum on XBMC.ORG. Thanks though.

Not sure if this is the right place , but I'd thought I'd pick the brains of the experts here.

I have an HTPC that I'm retiring, but I was thinking of using the parts, changing the case, adding more drives, and making a media server because it would save some money. My worry is that the parts are an overkill, and will suck to much power. These are the components:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
GIGABYTE GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
ADATA 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model

Any advice would be appreciated (on whether it would cost too much to run, or even on what case to get that isn't too big). Thanks.

How much power does this draw at idle in the current setup? It might not be much to begin with. Is the MB and CPU new enough to be the type that auto-throttle the power down at idle? If so then it shouldn't be a problem at all.
IMHO this setup is not overkill at all for re-purposing as an NAS. You can be assured of good performance. The point of the opening stickie is getting the minimum HW (power & price) necessary to get one up and running. You are free to go up from there and many on the unRAID website forums do.

Yup seems fine to me. You could even look around and learn how to undervolt the E8400 for better power consumption if you're worried (Although power is pretty cheap)

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/intel-wolfdale_11.html#sect0

Shows power consumption of the E8500 chip.

Wouldn't be too worried....

Sorry for the late reply punking, just saw your post. I also turned an old HTPC with similar specs (C2D E6550 with an intel G45 MB) into an unRaid server and have been very happy with the results.

A couple notes on the motherboard you're using:
  • The onboard Realtek NIC will give terrible performance in unRaid, add an Intel PCIe Gigabit NIC and you'll be much happier
  • The JMicron IDE controller is not supported. This is too bad becuase you likely have an old IDE drive kicking around that you could have used as a cache drive
  • Make sure you're not using the onboard RAID functions on the board
  • Make sure you set the SATA controller to AHCI mode, otherwise not all the controllers will be visible to unRAID (chipset limitation)
  • Turn off all the bell and whistles on that board in the BIOS (Firewire, audio, onboard NIC, IDE controller, etc)

That board has 5 onboard SATA connectors + 1 eSATA. You can use an eSATA to SATA cable to connect another internal drive to the eSATA connector so you can have 6 drives for your array (something like this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812296271CVF.

As for a case that's really a personal preference. I'm using a mATX tower that was cheap and allows me to install up to 10 drives: http://www.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/case/mini-tower/elite-343.html

Good luck with the build!

Any suggestions for a cheap motherboard to use for NAS? I am in the US. I was hoping to find something I could get for $80.00 or less to at least be able to start with two 2TB drives. I would like 6 drives eventually. But can live with space for four drives.

at the 80 dollar mark - I have one of these along with a sas card giving me 15 drive spaces (still building)

Thank you for the answer it looks good. I may go with it. The CPU's are more thn I wanted to spend though. I realize this is nowhere near as good. But could this be used to run a NAS? It is 127.00 for CPU and motherboard. I could get by really cheap if that is the case.

I am really tight on money. I have a case.and power supply. I am just looking to put my movies and music on this. I will stream through a PC in one room (XBMC) and I also have a Roku that I assume I could use plex to stream until I can afford a box to put by my other TV.

I am not asking if this is an awesome setup. Just could it get by used as a NAS (Unraid)

Thanks again.

You can use a cheap dual core celeron for round about 40$ on the first board. Could be a bit more powersaving than the amd board you postet.
The amd has 8 sata ports.

I would choose depending on the available slots for hdds. If you can fit 8 hdds in your case, take the second board.

RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - Desisuperman - 2014-01-08

I noticed that no recommendations were made to purchase "server" type hardware (supermicro, Intel Xeon etc..). So is it fair to say that this type of hardware is not necessary to build a media server and would just be overkill? IS there any advantages of going with a micro motherboard or is it just cost effective? Is there any performance loss going this route?

I'm building a media server either from what I have or building one from scratch. It would be great if can make due with what I have to save me some cash. Just a side note, my house is wired for CAT 6.

My current PC is this;

CASE Antec Nine Hundred Case
http://products.ncix.com/detail/antec-nine-hundred-mid-tower-gamer-case-900-atx-9-drive-bay-no-ps-top-usb2-0-1394-audio-46-21123.htm

MOTHERBOARD
MSI DKA790GX Platinum
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/DKA790GX-Platinum.html

PROCESSOR AMD Phenom II x4 3.0 OC to 3.5
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-HDZ940XCGIBOX-Phenom-Edition-Processor/dp/B001NFT2RI

RAM 8GB OCZ Reaper DDR2 PC2-8500 / 1066 MHz
http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-ddr2-pc-8500-reaper-hpc-eol.html

HDD WD Green 2TB x 5 (only 2 installed. The other 3 are in my HTPC which i will pull and put into this system)
Seagate 2TB x 1

PSU Corsair TX650W
http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CMPSU-650TX-650-Watt-Series-Certified/dp/B000X24ISU

OS Windows 7 Pro X64

To get the additional SATA ports I would need something like this
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=2222136460&vpn=SI-PEX40062&manufacture=SYBA

Before I start buying and reconfiguring my existing hardware, would what I have above be sufficient as a media server? It's main purpose will be to strictly stream HD movies, pictures to various platforms throughout the house running XBMC

RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - CaptainPsycho - 2014-01-09

It will be overkill, but work fine.

RE: Looking to Build Your Very First unRAID Server? - Desisuperman - 2014-01-09

This computer is out of date so I would take overkill over obselete anyday lol Plus using this would save me cash on buying new crap.

Anybody else want to weigh in on this build and if it's safe to go ahead and use as a Media Server?
