RE: [RELEASE] Weather Underground - ronie - 2016-01-16

i had a look and indeed wunderground is inserting format characters (tabs / newlines) in the alert messages / descriptions.

i'd rather not mess with those in the addon. so i'll prefer to keep it as-is.

you know, i do fully agree with that.
it was the main reason why i gave up on the addon at the time.
the second reason was that there was another weather provider (openweathermap) that could easily provide the same functionality as wunderground.
at the time they provided full unlimited free access to their api, whereas we were getting way over our budget with wunderground.

sadly the tides have turned over the past year and openweathermap has drastically reduced the number of free api calls.
i'm currently in the process of moving the openweathermap addon to a user provided api key system as well.
fact is, there are no weather providers that provide free global extended weather info.

we currently have two options:
1) let users provide their own api key
2) give up on extended weather and stick to the limited weather data provided by the yahoo weather addon.

i have a damn hard time making up my mind on how to proceed.
it goes without saying that if we receive a complaint from either wunderground or openweathermap about our way of using their service,
the addon will be removed without hesitation.

if you want to play it fairly, i could say nothing is stopping you from purchasing a key... for only $3600 dollars a year ;-)

in their defence, they didn't pull the plug. i did.
i didn't agree to a new set of terms they suggested in return for free api access.

(2016-01-02, 01:13)VonMagnum Wrote: I'm guessing this is because they get no money for letting people access their data without advertising or the like to compensate them and having tens of thousands of XBMC/Kodi users checking the weather all day long off their servers was probably kind of drag long-term.

yup, selling weather data is their business and nothing wrong with that.
giving it away for free won't keep their company in business for long.

Ronnie,

Perhaps if someone from the formal Kodi development team approached UbiMet they may be open to providing API access - could help get their name / service more well known in the process...

http://www.ubimet.com/

the makers of the free MoreCast weather apps for iOS and Android - they provide weather alerts, advanced global forecasting, lightning detection, weathermaps, etc and have an API to access the info (private access from what I have found thus far)

info / links to the weather app:

idk - a shot in the dark but maybe worth asking? :-)

known issue:
- kodi caches the weather map images, so they'll never get updated

for skinners:
- i probably need to add/change a few infolabels so they match the ones included in openweathermap

Is there any news about this with maps

regards

thanx for the suggestion! i'll keep it in mind.
it may work, it may not.

it's basically the same as we did with Wunderground, we approached them with a free api access request
and in return, we've listed them as a sponsor on our website.

it worked out pretty well for a while.. until we started approaching 2 million api calls a day :-)

Thanks for that Ronie. I am now a supporter of wug

Thanks for keeping WU addon alive for Kodi and the consideration of other weather providers is also much appreciated. I actually have purchased a WU subscription for the app on my phone (removes ads) - for Kodi the personal API works for me - thank you very very very very very much for getting the maps working again by the way Smile

RE: [RELEASE] Weather Underground - zbyna - 2016-01-19

Hi, thanks for sticking with WU addon.
I have used this one : https://github.com/un1versal/weather.wunderground/tree/personal_api sofar.
Many skinners drop supporting for ChancePrecipitation (%) in favour of Precipitation (mm) info.
I hope your wu restoration will change the situation back Smile

RE: [RELEASE] Weather Underground - mgonzales - 2016-01-22

Caught the following error excerpt using 5.0.1 of WU addon.

Kodi 16 rc1 on Win 10 x64 Pro

didn't notice anything in the GUI and only caught it looking for another unrelated error in logs file.

Seems to have been a transient issue so just sharing as an FYI

http://pastebin.com/Frdd0hSY

Thanks for bringing back WU to Jarvis!

thanx, i think i've found the culprit, but it would help me verify
if you could post a log as described in the first post.

I haven't seen it since and not sure what triggered it - I didn't have debugging on when I happen to notice it while looking for something completely unrelated in the log file.

If I do see it again or find how to trigger / reproduce it I will certainly grab the log with debugging on for you.

RE: [RELEASE] Weather Underground - madders - 2016-01-29

Hi,

I just installed this addon (following the instructions in post 1). I tried to install through the GUI but I got a dependencies not met error, so I manually unzipped the file in the addons directory.

It appears to work okay except I don't see any of the weather icon images in the forecast. Just an empty space where the picture should be for each day. I've tried a couple of skins - Confluence and Aeon MQ6, and it's not working in either.

RE: [RELEASE] Weather Underground - ronie - 2016-01-29

perhaps you got that dependencies error for a reason? ;-)

it's to prevent people from installing this addon on an incompatible kodi version.

RE: [RELEASE] Weather Underground - madders - 2016-01-29

Ah ok Smile I thought I was using the latest official release, but now I realise I'm not. I'm on 15.1 and I see 15.2 is available. So if I upgrade to 15.2 will this fix the problem? I'm not sure where to find out what version of Kodi the addon supports?

RE: [RELEASE] Weather Underground - ronie - 2016-01-29

nope, you need 16.0, which hasn't been officially released.
