Thinking of picking up this SSD - toymachine2009 - 2011-12-20

With many SSD's getting pretty bad ratings on newegg saying they are failing after a little bit or dont run to well or fast or whatever it may be I have been putting off purchasing one until the technology is there and we dont have to worry about that really.

Well with the hard drive prices sky rocketing I really need a Decent size HD since I have 200gigs left and counting on my 1.5tb drive. So I do have a 1tb in my HTPC so my idea would be to Purchase an SSD for my HTPC and take the 1tb put it in my media server to hold me off for a while hoping till prices drop for HD's so I can pick up some 2tb HD's.

I did find this one and was hard to find one with 5 star ratings.

So I think I may purchase that and throw my 1tb thats in my HTPC and use it as storage.

What would be a good way to take Windows and my xbmc settings I currently have and transfer it to SSD or is it better to just Reinstall windows on the SSD?

the Patriot Torqx 32GB or the Crucial M4 64GB or both recommended and reliable..

to transfer your current windows installation from a normal HDD to an SSD,

altho i've never done it, i know you have to use a System Recovery application

such as ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE, MACRIUM REFLECT or DRIVE SNAPSHOT..

i use Drive Snapshot..

so u have to make a copy/backup of your O/S drive,

this will result in a single file or maybe split into 2 files,

and then, you'll have to swap your drives out officially

and then re-install your backup just created using your chosen backup software's

recovery disc...

yes, u need to boot on its disc or some even let u create a USB recovery flash key

which u can boot on...

but note that u need to choose an application that can 'Restore your created o/s backup to dissimilar hardware'

since your going to swap a normal HDD to an SSD...

alright, hope this helps Tongue

Thanks! I will look into those programs.

MACRIUM REFLECT PRO does 'Restore to dissimilar hardware'

If I do decide to to reinstall windows can I just backup the XBMC USER DATA folder and keep my settings such as skins and add ons etc?

wow love how it booted to windows for less than a sec on and xbmc came right up and started working.. Very nice!

Whats difference between these 2 SSDs?

- CpTHOOK - 2011-12-20

Sata ii vs sata iii

- toymachine2009 - 2011-12-20

So is Sata II considerably slower?

- eskro - 2011-12-20

not really, to my eyes, pretty much all patriot SSD videos are booting windows in ~23sec!

- toymachine2009 - 2011-12-20

Well $5 price different after rebates so I might as well go for the little faster one.
