Can XBMC use the Plex server? - dbbd - 2012-01-09

What I like about plex is the server/client separation.
I think for a server that downloads torrents, and is up all the time, it makes a lot of sense to have also the data scrubbing, subtitle downloading and other data retrieval functions.
The player then is "just" a player.

I know plex is based on XBMC. I don't know enough about XBMC (I'm a boxee deserter looking around for my next software) or about plex. I have installed and looked at plex, and while it works and seems nice, the interface is sluggish. My next test is going to be the XBMC 11.0. However, I though to ask this question about plex-server interoperability.

Thanks,
Dan

While I don't really care for Plex's stance on using XBMC as a jump off point, then closing the software for their server, then stating that they would never open it, an add-on for XBMC to utilize a Plex server is available.

I don't know how well it performs or how it is to set up. Check the thread that I linked to, it probably has most of the info you need.

Closing and never reopening - sounds like boxee, are you referring to plex?
just want to be sure. I have no idea what plex's story is.

I run xbmc 11.0 on my living room htpc. I also run a Plex server on the same htpc pointed to the same libraries. This allows me to get the media to my iPhone and my LG tv in the bedroom with a built in Plex client. Works well.

I dumped boxed last year.

I do the same thing and it also works well other than Plex having a harder time scraping files.

I also use plex for myplex when I am not at home. That also works pretty well if your connection is fast enough. (also give some of my friends access).

Yes, I'm referring to Plex. They forked XBMC for their client, hacked together their server software as closed, and stated that they were never going to open the source for the server. It's available as a compiled binary only.

Well, forget plex. I installed Eden on my HTPC, and I'm impressed.

What I don't like (blame the learning curve):
1. can XBMC play music? not videos, plain mp3? (I couldn't find out how)

2. Pictures browser - very basic, very slow on a large library. There are probably add-ons. Need to find out

3. Confusing menus & sub-menus. I tried the Xeebo skin, but did not like it. Back to confuence. Need to find a wiki page that describes the menu tree.

4. Remote - since my remote is set up for boxee, using keystroke emulation, it works. I probably miss some/lots of functionality, so I need to try the MCE setup through eventghost.
(my opinion is that the boxee/apple 6 buttons remote concept is brilliant. I wish everything would work that way).

5. wiki update for eden: I'd suggest a new wiki tree so whatever page is updated - the new eden-version is stored in the eden tree. Just an idea.

Acid test will be my spouse...

Select Music from the home page, select add source and add a source where your mp3s can be found. Once you added the source select it to check the files are there. Optionally, now press C and select "scan to database" from the context menu. However note that unless all the mp3 tags are perfect the scan will result in a bit of mess. It took me aaaaaaaaages to find all the dodgy tags in my music collection.

You shouldn't need Eventghost. See http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Using_a_remote_control_with_XBMC and possibly http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Using_a_Microsoft_remote_control_in_Windows if you have an eHome remote.

My IR is USB-UIRT, my remote is a harmony. I can set the harmony to MCE, but not sure if XBMC will work with USB-UIRT directly.

Ah, no, XBMC won't work with a USB-UIRT without some form of helper software.

Yeah you'll need EventGhost if you want to use your USB-UIRT.

PleXBMC, which gives XBMC access to your Plex PMS metadata. http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=92310
