RE: Kodi/XBMC in the media? Post links here - deadite66 - 2017-04-10 If we had DRM support would it only work on x86/x64 kodi? could you compile your own version for an arm board and have DRM work without a necessary binary blob. That's because you literally can't today. That's like the whole point of this discussion, being capable of watching encrypted streams as well as all the currently unencrypted stuff. Sadly, it's not possible to do this without a binary blob. Also, we're pretty sure Kodi can't distribute this blob while remaining GPL compliant, so we can't give it to you (though that's still under discussion). So it's only available on platforms that have the blob compiled that users can install themselves. Fortunately, that's pretty much every platform. It's pre-installed in Android, you can get it by simply installing Chrome on x86 platforms, and it is at least compiled on the other ARM platforms, though I'm not sure what the best way is to actually get it onto those platforms. RE: Kodi/XBMC in the media? Post links here - da-anda - 2017-04-10 please note that Kodi won't do DRM, we only add infrastructure to be able to use of the DRM mechanisms available by the OS. We're not in favor of DRM, but as we can't convince content providers to get rid of it, it's unfortunately a necessity to support in case you would like to get any legitimate content these days. The fact that you believe that Kodi would be forked with the intention of "stripping out" whatever DRM we decide to implement shows that you have an inherent misunderstanding of why the DRM implementation was there in the first place. Enabling DRM will allow certain content providers onto our platform. It does not prevent non-DRM content / add-ons from being consumed, yes, even the nefarious pirated content. It's a win win situation. The only objections should be from free software "purists" who don't like the idea of proprietary blobs anywhere near free software. RE: Kodi/XBMC in the media? The firm has warned sellers that their accounts face termination if they’re found to be selling “certain” prohibited streaming media players. “Products offered for sale on Amazon should not promote, suggest the facilitation of, or actively enable the infringement of or unauthorized access to digital media or other protected content,” reads the company’s warning. “Any streaming media player or other device that violates this policy is prohibited from sale on Amazon.” Gadgets and tech news in pictures + show all Amazon has compiled a list of banned products, but it can only be accessed by sellers. The company also refused to tell The Independent which products are on the list. “If you sell these products, we may immediately suspend or terminate your selling privileges and destroy inventory in our fulfillment centers without reimbursement,” the announcement continues. The update has been widely interpreted as a ban on so-called “fully loaded Kodi boxes”. The open-source software enables users to illegally stream copyrighted content, such as TV shows, films and live sports, using a variety of free third-party add-ons. Earlier this year, the Premier League obtained an injunction enabling it to work hand-in-hand with UK internet service providers to block illegal streams fed to Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) boxes running Kodi, in real time. That is, we who pay for Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime Video, etc. will get the possibilty of legally accessing streams from those services inside Kodi. All the while Kodi will act no different att all for users accessing content in whatever other ways they do today. It's like adding a towbar to your car; you will not really notice it unless you hook up a carriage that you want to pull, and you as a user of the car don't have to use the towbar unless you actually want to pull a carriage, that is optional. Only downsides to adding a towbar to a car is that it will maybe make your car look less 'sporty' to some who currently don't care at all about the cars capability of pulling a carriage as they right now think/know that they will never ever buy a carriage. Exactly. ... and how the Kodi maintainers deal with the never ending torrent of brash entitlement daily on these forums is beyond me. There's nothing wrong at all with Kodi having a modular DRM capability. And all the 'Kodi box' users need not worry, something or another in your firmware will likely be broken anyway, you'll never see it come to fruition. Rest easy. RE: Kodi/XBMC in the media?
