Calibration Disc (Which one) - PatrickBateman - 2012-04-26

Hey all,

Just wondering what the best calibration software disc is, for using via xbmc (no external hardware required)

For example, our tv is exclusive connected to an xbmc HTPC, and all our media is passed through this box via HDMI. I know the best calibration will probably always come by using external hardware, but my goal here is to find the best disc that offers the best level of calibration without the requirement of external gadgetry.

I have tried a few calibration discs (with different levels of sucsess) and was looking to get opinions of the discs you guys use for calibrating your xbmc HTPC.

Anyone care to share?

I picked this up from the AVS forums... AVS HD 709 - Version 2c seems good, might be a bit old now, some mention in one of the Revision 3 episodes. Not sure of the ethics of posting the link, so the mod may edit/del this.

Hey Pat,
Yea, I've actually tried this disc (looks in folder.......) and still have this disc in iso format on my htpc.

I previously tried it xbmc (about a year ago) and like a few others I was only able to get access to the colour saturation running in increments of 25% for about 3hrs Smile

When I ran the ISO from a HDD I was not able to get anything other than the section above, no menus, no navigation etc?

I did try the MP4 versions and they seemed to work ok but were awkward to navigate. I use a monster disc at the moment and it too is getting old.

I'm considering buying WOW as it got great reviews and was hoping others may have tried it?
Do you use any others? Do you have issues with running the iso from a HDD in xbmc?
What currently gives you the best results (without external hardware)?
Thanks for the reply/info.

Cheers,
Pat~

I'm not deep into calibration, I used them long enough to find that each individual video has off more than I liked. I'm adjusting most of the parms each time I play something... to get the best for the image at hand. I've got around 5 pre-sets, and tweak from there. I find most LCD screens generally suck overall, and I'm thankful XBMC has contrast and brightness at hand. I think the biggest problem is XBMC doesn't handle Bluray disc menus. I don't want menus in my blueray movies but I would love for it to support menus just because its needed for calibration discs. Would love to know if anyone can get this working without external players.

I've broken all the individual files out as mp4, so I jump directly into the setting needed.

That explains everything, I totally never knew that Blush
Thanks HTPC_Guy that explains a hell of a lot of other issues I've had it's isos Blush

Just out of curiosity,
what are you using to calibrate at the moment? Are you using the AVS mp4 files?

@pat
Do you mean the mp4s from the AVS site or did you create your own?

Disney WOW: World of Wonder seems like a good choice. Also I've herd that Spears & Munsil High Definition Benchmark is a good choice.

Just a thought.... Since XBMC won't handle a bluray ISO (as far as menus), is there any reason a DVD ISO wouldn't work for calibration. I mean, I can't see why it would be much easier to calibrate with a high def version when we are just talking about test patters and such.

If making a disk seems a bit over the top... here's a video which may do for you.
It's a torrent, so you'll need tormenting software to download it.

Spears and Munsil is the best disc I've found, but nothing comes close to having your TV actually calibrated by an ISF certified calibrator.
