RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - -DDD- - 2013-09-15

S5 Power on is the only and best Option that came with CIR, i don't think Intel would cut this off.
They supported CIR many years on their ATX Mainboards, with S5 Power On Option.

The Difference of HSW GPU is that there is no more 24p Bug and you can have HQ Deinterlacing.

So to recap, invest in a good USB thumbdrive..you may not need that ssd after all.
This.

I'm using OpenELEC with the Celeron 847 NUC and I'm at a loss to see what a SSD would do. It simply runs awesome off a fast thumb drive. The wife approval factor (WAF) is off the scale and that's all that really matters.

Very interesting indeed. Before I settled on an OS/config I did alot of testing on thumb drives and always thought it performed very well compared the the SSD. I was using a "good" USB 2 stick so I can image a good usb 3 one would do even better even on a 2.0 port (elminate any bottleneck).

The biggest difference was the boot time with ssd being noticeably faster. With the new NUCs and USB 3, that difference may mostly disappear.

Thanks for the info guys.

I doubt the fan will be loud at all, most Set top boxes made by Motorola and Cisco have fans inside of them including mechanical hard drivers, you just don't know it.

That's if you can boot off the USB3 ports! Makes you wonder if that's why they left USB2 headers so you can put your memory stick inside!?

If your're feeling adventurous you could also try this one:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/8eckh0dsguue506/qsf-13DdM1/09.09.13/OpenELEC_Gotham-Intel.x86_64-devel-20130909202234-r15570.tar

Built by a guy (or girl, don't know) called CvH on the OpenElec forum. Gotham has a rewritten Audio Engine and 3D support for skins, which is pretty neat. XBMC automatically switches to 3D when playing a 3D movie. I have no stability issues on my i3 NUC.

No offence, but that's pretty useless, since those patches are already merged into 3.1.3
There's really no use for such a old build anymore.

I hadnt read that but it makes sense. When I built my desktop i7 (ivy bridge) I had a heck of a time booting off the 3.0 ports. But, when I had a Brix for a few weeks, I was able to boot of its ports (both 3.0) with ubuntu and openelec. Just couldnt get the damned USB remote to work right :/.

Sweet! May work out cheaper than an SSD. Now you just gotta find a tiny 8GB USB3 stick!

Just because a USB stick is US doesn't necessarily mean the flash memory inside it is fast enough to exceed USB 2 speed (which in reality tops out just under 30MB/sec).  Try a stick like a Sandisc Extreme USB 3.0.  I'm not sure you'll find anything that has both good read and write speeds in the smaller form factor though, and speaking generally any 8GB stick will have poor write speeds since there are few flash chips being written to at the same time (32 vs 64GB example).  A higher capacity like 32GB would give much better performance.  Read speeds should be fine if you buy a decent full size 8GB stick though.

Hi.

I just got my Intel NUC DCCP847DYE friday.

Installed XBMCBuntu on a 8 GB flash drive. Updated linux kernel to newest, updated Intel drivers, Vaapi, SNA etc. EVERYTHING is running smooth Big Grin

I have 2 problems/questions.

1. When I boot into recovery console, how can I change the screen resolution. I have it connected to a plasma tv (1024x768)
Don't know if that's called overscan. But the "picture" is too big, missing 3-4 character in top, left, right and bottom.

2. Inside XBMC... How can I change the keyboard layout to Danish. Instead of US/English... all the special characters are misplaced ( ; : * / ( ) and so on.
In console I have Danish layout and I can find the buttons Wink
