RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities (Sandy/Ivy Bridge) - saudagar - 2013-10-23

I read through pages and pages of this thread... but am finally confused.. Is celeron NUC worth the money? I have Rpi and it works great on small size (<4GB) movies... but struggles with bigger size movies. It is unusable with some programs like PseudoTV.

Reading from thread it seems Celeron cannot support 3d.. but how is it otherwise performance wise? Or shall i invest in i3 NUC with some extra $$.. is i3 an overkill for XBMC? I really dont care for 3D

worth the money is an individual decision, generally. As an upgrade to the Pi? Maybe not. From nothing? Yeah, I think so. If you can wait, there's supposed to be a low cost Bay Trail NUC coming in Q1 2014 that should be pretty good.

Based on my own experience, the Celeron is fine for normal BD content, I can not comment on 3D as I do not have any. It is a bit touchy about software though, mine was hopeless on BD content (ISO files) with Ubuntu Linux and XBMC, I messed around with it for a week and as it turns out, wasted money by buying another I3 (I now have two I3 and one Celeron) as Openelec solved the underlying problem and it is as smooth as you could ask for on everything up to BD content.

Value for money is a tough call. I know I could build something cheaper if I went out and bought components but the form factor is hard to beat unless you want something to show off and the case itself is better finished than any aftermarket PC case I have had over the years. I am happy with them at the price.

Thanks for comments. Looking at cpu benchmark between celeron and i3.. i am leaning towards i3. I dont want to buy something which i need to change very soon.

DC3217BY NUC comes with the thunderbolt connection. The drivers for thunderbolt to network comes for windows.. but can i get it working for openelec.. i.e. does openelec support this sort of network connection? I am about to buy this NUC but am not sure if network connection will work with this. I dont want to use the wifi connection.?

Why don't use the LAN Connection?

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities (Sandy/Ivy Bridge) - nickr - 2013-10-24

That model doesn't have a ethernet connector, you have to rely on the thunderbolt.

I want a Intel NUC to play all kind of HD content (Hi10p included). Should I go for a i3 NUC or better wait for any new specific model like Haswell?

THANKS.

So does thunderbolt connection works with openelec? Has someone used this with openelec?
