Pulled the trigger and bought the i3 (red and black version with thunderbolt ) with 64gb msata and the intel wifi card.
Sitting and reading up, and what i understand in the beginning there where problem with overheating. Is this fixed now?
Also a lot of the heating issues where caused by the intel msata 525 that where faulty.

But anyway, with al the new bios upgrades etc, is overheating still an issue on these?

There were 2 hardware updates regarding the NUC heat issues but I can only find documents that referring to the NUC with 847 onboard.

The only update regarding the DC3217BY has no relation to the heat issues;

I've bought one myself, couldn't resist the €140,- offer for the i3 version Wink
Put a Plextor M5M 128GB SSD in it and 2x 2GB memory and it goes like de brandweer Smile

I've played a bit with the fan settings and when setting the target-temp below 65 °C, the fan can be heard and the sounds keeps variating so its more conspicuous.
When setting it to 67-70 °C the NUC is silent enough that it doesn't stand out.

All and all it is a very nice item, that still has the same faults it has when it hit the market (no standard LAN, to few USB ports and no USB3, no other audio-out then by HDMI, and so on...), but with the selling price it has now, I can life with that Wink

Have installed Windows 7, MediaPortal, XBMC and of-course TMT(5) on it, so it can play Real 3D BR ISO's and rip's.

Hi, I read some of the posts in this thread, but because it has so many pages I am going to ask directly instead.
I want to buy the i3 NUC with thunderbolt (the black and red one) due to its current price (140 €), with 4 Gb RAM, a 60 Gb mSata drive and a wireless card.
Are there any issues I should be aware off, or were all of them solved? I mean, problems with the video drivers (I intend to run linux), colors (the color range 0 - 255 ot that, I have a a band new Sony Bravia TV), hardware video decoding, sound, heating, etc.

Yeah same here... Couldn't resist at that price =)

Might be looking in to the akasa case ( its cheap ) if it bothers me with the temps / noice.

Or wich case ( no more than 50-60bucks) fanless is recommended here?

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC (Sandy/Ivy Bridge 2012 edition) - p750mmx - 2013-12-29

I didn't find a Akasa model that suited this model NUC, but with the right fan settings that hasn't have to be a disappointment I guess.

if you got the: DC3217BY modell, the motherboard in that kit is: D33217CK akasa got a case for that.

Could you link to that Akasa model maybe to get that clear? It should have outputs as shown on the right in the picture below.

I would like to know this as well, since I just ordered the DC3217BY.
The Akasa website itself only refers to other models.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

sorry late answer, my bad i did not realise that the page i saved had the last letters wrong on the motherboard spec.
I Emailed akasa now and asked them about our motherboard and what case they got if any :/

my cpu heat is around 63-66C is that a normal number, comming from RPI and android devices that seems a little high? But thats maybe normal with pc/nuc?

Quote from the link I placed in my older reply (2104);

"The Automatic fan control mode is nice, but to be honest, there was no point fiddling with it much. At the default BIOS setting — Auto | 78°C minimum | 20% minimum duty cycle | 8% duty cycle increment — the acoustics were excellent, and the cooling good enough, despite the relatively high CPU core temperatures. "

Intel specification for the i3-3217U: TJUNCTION: 105 °C

Aaa nice thx for answering! Then im well within the operating margin! Ill post here as soon as i get a answer regarding the case to.

Something i noticed is that the nuc dont power all the way of. It goes in to some kind of standby mode. The blue LED inside in on and its always a little warm ( not hot in anyway) Is there a way to turn it completely off or is it designed this way?

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC (Sandy/Ivy Bridge 2012 edition) - p750mmx - 2013-12-31

That could be a setting in the BIOS, mine is completely cold before starting up. When pressing the power-button I get a cold boot, not some kind of resume.

Mine has a blue led inside of it thats always on i can see it through the fron usb port. but when it boots its like a cold boot, i get the intel logo and the option to press Fkeys for bios functions etc.
But its a little warm... does yours have a blue led light on when off?

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC (Sandy/Ivy Bridge 2012 edition) - p750mmx - 2013-12-31

Can't see it, maybe when its completely dark, will look again this evening.

Edit: no, no light visible. Do you maybe have a WiFi/Bluetooth adapter placed in the NUC? That could have a light on it and that also could get a bit warm. I use an external USB wifi antenna from a Zotac so nothing is placed in the NUC besides memory and SSD.

Sure youré right! All i got in my nuc is a msata drive and a 4GB memory stick. And its the msata drive thats on. (the disc got a blue led on it) The computer is off and when i just put the power plug in without touchng the power button, the disc led turns on an starts generating heat. in ither words its always on. is this a bios thing? It cant be a faulty drive, cause it isnt suppost to get power?

What brand and type SSD you are using?
