RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Toadvine - 2013-05-22

Too bad, I was hoping I was the only one having that issue and there was an easy fix. So I'm assuming that no one in this thread running OpenELEC is using a build that is working 100%?

If so, I would like a link to that build. Otherwise I guess we'll just have to wait.

I'm using a Celeron NUC with 2gb ram and OE running off a USB stick, Fritsch build solved my video issues but gave me audio issues Sad

I'm using Fritsch dev build, but I didn't try your scenario.. I'll see and I'll said you if I have this issue.

I mean the latest build on that thread. I don't know why, but this build solved my issue..
Can you please link me the post you're pointing to? I'd like to read it.

Thanks!

P.D: Sorry for my english, I know is not quiet good.

Sure, here's the thread -- http://openelec.tv/forum/116-vaapi-intel/64352-green-screen-freezes-on-video-playback?limitstart=0

And your English is fine btw.

NUC is not fanless. You can buy a third party fanless enclosure if you like, but I haven't seen any complaints about noise.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Crssi - 2013-05-22

Aeon Nox skin can be very noisy... don't know why is aeon nox so much CPU intensive, but it has features that other skins don't have (at least not from the GUI).

That is fixable though. You can take a nightly and include xrandr --output HDMI1 --set "Broadcast RGB" "Limited 16:235" in autostart.sh for fixing the crushed blacks.

I'm running this build (doesn't need that xandr command):

http://openelec.tv/forum/116-vaapi-intel/64006-vaapi-deinterlacing-testing?start=78#73652

It was still too dark for my taste. So I have:

xrandr --output HDMI1 --brightness 1.00 --gamma 1.20:1.20:1.20

In my autostart.sh to fix this.

1.15 would be better for me, but then with dark scenes it becomes too dark and adjusting brightness throws off the colors and contrast too much. Just test in ssh to see what suits you if you feel you need to change the levels.

Raytestrak, thanks for this. I had tried "xrandr --output HDMI1 --brightness 1.15 --gamma 1.15:1.15:1.15" which someone else posted in the thread on the OE forum but I thought that over-corrected the problem and made lights and skin tones too washed out. With the Broadcast RGB command (I'm running regular 3.0.3) + this one I finally have the picture to my liking and can see the blinking gray dots in the test pattern screen.

The fan noise using Aeon Nox was too much for me too so I switched to ACE which I'm liking a lot better.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Crssi - 2013-05-22

I have pointed out the "xrandr --output HDMI1 --brightness 1.15 --gamma 1.15:1.15:1.15" workaround but, as I wrote some posts later, this doesn't really resolve the problem, but it is better than nothing at the moment for hardware decoding.
Problem is that xrandr is missing the contrast directive (this might be because it is not exposed in the drivers), thats why I have used gamma for, but it is not the same.

If you have i3 NUC and not a celeron version then better option is to do software decoding at this time and modify brightness and contrast in GUI.
My settings for both, brightness and contrast is 58... it is 1.15/2.0 = 0.575 = cca 0,58% or 58 in 0-100% scale.

Software decoding works flawlessly for my picture quality taste... but it costs in the CPU utilisation and since this still does not produce fan noise it is good for me... for now. Wink

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Raytestrak - 2013-05-22

I have no fan noise (during movie playback) with Aeon Nox. Only when manually selecting artwork, or running an intensive plugin such as artwork cleaner, does the fan start up. The downside of the nuc is that the fan makes a LOT of noize. A lot more than my previous E350, but all in all it's a way better machine.

Software decoding makes my nuc HOT (and not in a good way), it heats up to 83 degrees on software decoding and only reaches 58 with VAAPI turned on.

Thanks Crssi. Your suggested command gave me something else to try along with the Broadcast RGB command so at least got me pointed in the right direction. Just wanted to post my experience so others experiencing the same problem can try it both ways or experiment with their own command settings. (Maybe I'll even try to tweak it myself as soon as I read up a little more on what the numbers actually mean so I'm not just shooting in the dark.)

One question though: do you know when this black crush problem is eventually fixed (whether through a driver update from Intel or a fix in a future OE release) if I'll need to go back and remove these commands from the autostart.sh? Just want to know if I need to keep tabs on it from here when a solution comes out or if it should just correct automatically.

I see that there is a new build from Fritsch (in the openelec forum's VAAPI post)

Code:
05/22/13-2: Intel driver bump to 2.21.7 (this should also fully support haswell) dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55728161/Ope...13825-r14382.tar.bz2 (RC6 is again enabled by default, see the thread on howto disable) - Celeron NUC owners, please test.

I think I'll test it on my NUC.

Some resources about brightness,contrast,gamma etc.:
http://www.poynton.com/notes/brightness_and_contrast/
http://www.poynton.com/notes/colour_and_gamma/GammaFAQ.htm
http://www.audioholics.com/tweaks/calibrate-your-system/hdmi-black-levels-xvycc-rgb
http://lareservediscomobile.free.fr/doc/part-04-chapter-07.html

I believe that when this is fixed it should be removed from autostart.sh.
But, I dont believe that this will be fixed soon, as far I found out is that Intel is stalling here.... I really hope that I am wrong here.
It might that OE devs will find something to bring contrast directive to xrandr, but I am sure that they are experts, they know what are doing, they are doing a really good job and if there was sollution they would already implemented it.
Well see what will happen when haswell will be available in the next few weeks or so.

What I was told by some friend who is ingeneer in embedded systems is that manufacturers (like intel, nvidia, amd) actually sell "features" to computer manufacturers.
As feature I mean for example HW 3D acceleration methods and also access to settings like brightness, contrast... etc.
They make a lot of money for "feature access" and they cannot in the same time sell this and give it for free for open source.
You know what I mean by now.
But this is all unconfirmed and you have to take is only as roumor... I can be totaly false here.

Yes, the command through SSH to disable RC6 was all I needed to fix my green screen crashes when starting playback. It's only been a couple days but I've tried several videos, rebooted a couple times, etc. and everything plays fine now.

I haven't tried any of Fritsch's development builds since I don't do TV through my NUC and don't need the deinterlacing. Hope it works for you though.

Thanks for links! Really appreciate that. As for what Intel is doing with it's drivers I would know but to me it's an entirely different thing to market access to settings controls like brightness and contrast as a feature than to have them set wrong to begin with. I'm a layperson on this stuff but isn't the issue that with the current drivers the black and green levels are automatically set too high? If that's the case then it shouldn't be a "feature" for them to simply fix it, right?

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Crssi - 2013-05-23

Agree... but can't do nothing. Sad

So you're now running OE 3.0.3 disabling RC6, aren't you?
If so, I think I'll try 3.0.3 with this fix...

Thank you all for the info.
