I just didn't want to risk it messing anything else up when I finally got OE working for me just fine otherwise. It's just annoying to know there is the potential for tweaking through the autostart.sh but that I can't actually get it do what I tell it to.

Do you see a difference when running the command from ssh? Changing the setting is instant, so it's easy to test what value works for you.

I haven't really had a chance to yet. I'm still in process of ripping/converting my movie collection so my laptop almost always has jobs running where I can't move it from the back studio where I do that work (tied to external blu ray and USB drives and powerline connected to my server, etc.) But as it happens I just got a new ultrabook to test drive so I'll give it a shot on that next time the wife is out and I can park with it in front of the TV for a while.

The Core i3 has HD4400 GPU.

The i3 may provide a quieter experience. The NUC is small and heat is an issue. It took a while to finally get my i3 NUC silent. I still haven't put in the BT/WiFi card be because of a concern for heat issues.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how much better the new processors behave from that perspective. I had to return a NUC because of a defective fan. Great service from Intel I might add.

In any case it would be nice to have a passively cooled version of the NUC. The current crop of replacement cases seem neat but aren't cheap, and not easy to find.

I initially thought of getting the i3 model too for lower heat/noise/power consumption. But with 4k resolution videos getting more popular, it seems the i5 version with hd5000 is the way to go. What do you guys think?

Unless you have a 60+ inch 4K TV, I don't think you'll see any noticeable difference from a normal viewing distance, but others might disagree.

New Intel Graphics Drivers out for the NUC:

6/11/2013 9.18.10.3165

DRIVER VERSION: 15.31.9.3165 and 15.31.9.64.3165
DATE: June 05, 2013

Mostly 4th GEN additions - HD5000

Nothing really relevant for our INTEL NUC 3rd GEN HD4000

New features:

 The Intel Graphics Control Panel now keeps the advanced HDMI settings such as Quantization and xvYCC persistent between reboots.

Issues Fixed (as they may relate to our windows / XBMC environment):

Fixed an issue where monitors not supporting EDID were locked to 1366x768 resolution.
Resolved DWM.exe crash error “Desktop Window Manager stopped working and was closed” reported on systems with discrete graphics with Switchable Graphics enabled.
Resolved an issue where power on the second and third monitors are not detected while daisy-chained.
Fixed an issue where a vertical line unexpectedly appears on the right side while at the Windows locked screen, when screen is unlocked, or when resuming from Sleep or Hibernate state.
Fixed issue where screen may turn black after switching to Clone mode.

IMHO, you're right.

I am looking forward to becoming a NUC user this week, I recently sold my WDTV live it worked great but I was itching to move to xbmc and had been waiting for my Ouya to be delivered, lets just say the Ouya is no where near powerful enough to run XBMC smoothly, and had numerous crashes and random drop outs at 45mins to any video.

So with that now sold on eBay I picked up the Celeron version of the NUC with 2gb of RAM and a 32gb SSD. I am looking forward to running OpenELEC. Looking on YouTube the Celeron version seems to be smooth as butter and plays everything up to bluray rips without breaking a sweat.

Dr_F I'm sure you'll be very happy with the Nuc.
Over the years I've tried numerous different solutions for media consumption and the Nuc + Openelec + Flirc is by far the best user experience I've had.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - DaveNinja - 2013-06-18

can the same audio/video signal be sent out through both HDMI outputs at once?

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - jammyb - 2013-06-18

One would assume it would!?

Only a dual monitor setup in windows would control it properly.

I'll try it when mine returns!

You might see what cloning the displays will do in that regard.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - DaveNinja - 2013-06-18

can any of the xbmc-friendly version of linux output to two HDMI signals?
