My question is, can the celeron nuc do all of this and stay on 24/7?

I don't see why not. It should be able to do that and more.

Well I asked because I'm getting a lot of lag with all the movies I play and internet has been going slow on the nuc.
I have updated everything. I have 80 gig msata &4 gig ram. I thought it would be able to handle that and run a recording software of my security cams.
Also in task manager the cpu goes from 30 to 100 percent.

Please help someone.

How much CPU does XBMC use alone and how much CPU does the security cam software use alone? I would go about it like that. Maybe the security software isn't very efficient.

Any chance you could post a couple of pics on how you installed the Simerec? I've had mine in the box for about 6 weeks and need to get it installed....

Hey bud, you obviously missed my thread......

I haven't installed security camera software yet. I have been testing out xbmc with 720&1080p movies. I have been getting tremendous lag. I've tested other PC and xbmc runs fine. I thought it could be celeron nuc is not powerful enough.

If you look back in this thread you will see several people with the Celeron saying they play high bitrate 1080p with bitstreaming HD audio without problems. Heavy skins apparently is smooth on the Celeron as well. I had the weaker Xtreamer 2 before and it also played 1080p flawless. Something wrong with your setup.

Cheers! It's working really well. Was worried the IR might of been hindered by the metal chassis but it seems to be fine. What a difference just being able to switch it on from totally off is awesome!

I updated the bio and everything is fine now. I think ill exchange the celeron for i3 instead because you never know. I might need extra power. Thanks

I just bought a Dark Knight BR so I can give it a go on my NUC. I have the i3. Runs XBMC very well. No issues playing VC-1/TrueHD rips such as Blade Runner. I stream my media from a Synology NAS. Overall, a dream setup. I"ll let you know how I fare with Dark Knight streaming.

(edit: just noticed you're on Win. I'm running Openelec. Though I may also setup a spare msata as a Windows test - I've done it before, but found Windows drivers crappy by comparison)

Thanks for checking. I tried testing another VC1 truehd bluray ( there will be blood ) and it dropped frames during the opening sequence as well.

I also just tried an Openelec usb boot and they both played fine :/ Unfortunately I need that build to run under windows.

Ripped Dark Knight via MakeMKV. Loaded onto Synology and re-indexed on OpenElec. Played perfectly w TrueHD - as it looks like it does for you on USB key.

My OCZ 30GB SSD came in. Couldn't get my NUC to see it. Then found this on Intel site, before you buy accessory/SSD check this compatibility list out:

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-033763.htm

Sure enough, the OCZ Nocti SSDs are incompatible. I should've stuck with Intel like my original drive.

I'm buying another msata SSD so I can load up Win 8 and try streaming on it. I'd like extra functionality of running full Win OS on my home theater. But so far I've had much better luck running XBMC via OpenElec (rock solid).

Ah, that sounds frustrating, I didn't even check that list when buying my SSD's. I just grabbed the most popular one based on the NUC on amazon.

It's funny OpenElec works for everything except bitstreaming audio on my box. The blue lights turns on on the amp but no audio comes out. If i turn the audio on the amp up all the way I can hear some faint sounds. If i then switch the audio input in XBMC and switch it back, it'll work. But stop the movie and play another one - blue light and extremely low volume. The windows XBMC doesn't have that issue. Kinda odd. It works fine on my other Receiver so it could be a weird issue with the amp. And then my other NUC needs to run media center for TV so neither box can have openelec on it.

I noticed a few more things that might be helpful to people.

On the windows machine the vcpu is near 100% and on the openelec box it's in the teens. My guess is there's a hardware acceleration issue on the windows side.

Based off another thread I downloaded one of the nightly builds and gave that a shot. The vcpu was still just as high but A LOT less dropped frames. Not zero dropped frames, but the film was watchable. So looks like they're doing some improvements in the next version.

Anyone have the Akasa nuc case? Tempted to acquire as its half the price of the tranquil one.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Platypus2 - 2013-07-23

I was looking to get the new haswell version thats coming out in a couple of months but am a bit concerned about sound at the moment. I'm struggling to find a decent way of getting optical sound out of the NUC, it seems to me that USB sound cards are pretty poor and either have terrible driver issues or the sound suffers from crackling/popping or even worse sync issues. They also seem to be all at least 3 years old, which I guess is normal for sound cards but still...

Is there anyone here who uses their NUC with optical out, and if so, what are you using and what is your experience with it like?

Should I be looking at something else if I need optical out Sad?

you could get a switch that strips audio from the hdmi signal to optical: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=5557&seq=1&format=2

i assume you're using an avr that doesn't support hdmi?
