RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Bmul - 2013-08-24

The Intel cpu shuts down at temperature higher 100c

Hello everyone,
these NUCs seem very interesting for a high performance experience, but can you guys tell me if they support 3D and Bluray 3D, PowerDVD etc?

At the top of the page is "search thread" in my sig is NUC WIKI.

Yes!

I've been running my i3 NUC in it for 2 weeks now. I purchased mine from Sidewinder Computers.

I'm running W8 Home, 60GB mSATA, 4GB ram, wired LAN.

I am happy with the fit and finish of the Akasa Newton. The absolute only gripe I have is that the power LED is crazy way too bright. (yes, I know this is a easy fix.)

After running it a while in stock configuration, I was unhappy with the temperatures. It was idling in XBMC (Aeon Nox) at 66C and would peak at 84C. I know that these temps are within the operating specs but I had a few ideas on how to do "better".

My first idea was to vent the case. The Akasa Newton has no air vents for passively cooling the memory, mSATA area. That area is left to "bake" from the CPU heat. I thought of drilling some holes in the bottom cover plate, but then thought of a vastly simpler option. I just screwed some motherboard standoffs into the case's cover plate mounts and then screwed the cover plate onto them. This creates a 5mm gap between the case and the cover.

Secondly I went into the NUC's BIOS and set the processor priority from "High Performance" to "Low Power".

Also, to optimize the passive venting I mounted the case vertically.

So now my temperatures range from a low of 42C to a peak of 71C. With playback running around 48C.

As an added bonus, the gap between the case and the cover is illuminated by the backwash from the power LED (which I covered with a spot of black tape) and that gives it a much more subdued "on state indication".

This picture was taken in a totally dark room, so the exposure settings show light coming through the LED locations, where as this is not noticeable to the naked eye.

I have not noticed any subjective change to the performance since changing the BIOS to "Low Power" mode.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Bmul - 2013-08-25

You should have tested after the BIOS modification.
And again after the case modification.

Probably the case modification will not do much.
There is no heat sink inside.

My Impactics case gives me 55c when I play video.
The Aeon Nox skin goes to 60c in idle.

I am going to test the low power mode on my i5

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - MediaPi - 2013-08-25

I thought sschlosnagle modifations where shear brilliance. Bmul isn't the case itself a heatsink attached to the SOC? with a gap you have every side, except the bottom plate, exposed to varying degree to the air. so better heat dissipation, no? sschlosnagle well done, I might use this modification one day.

Only critism I have is that the plate that is now extended isn't tocuhing the other "heatsink" sides so you've reduced the total area of the heatsink and lowered the ability of it dissipating heat??

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Bmul - 2013-08-25

I have just tested the "low power" mode in the BIOS.
It doesn't do anything to the idle temperature it is still +60c.

@MediaPi yes the case is the heat sink but the board is upside-down mounted

Looking at my Akasa case,... it looks like if I had a approx 1/2" thick copper/alum block,... I could put a dab of thermal paste on the msata drives chips,.. and then have it contact the bottom plate when installed,... which would help cool the SSD, as sitting on top of the Wireless, it gets hot!

Edit: ...

something like ....

take the heatsink that you removed from the original case,.. cut off one end,... and place it right on the msata.
I wonder if this would do any good,.... just "thinking out loud" here guys.

Something like this might work even better:

I've installed a Centrino 6235 wireless and BT card in the NUC,...
2 questions:

a. Will 1080P run over the wireless? I'm going to try it, but just thought I'd ask to see if anyone else is doing this.
b. What would be a reason for having a BT connection as well? I'm having a brain fart, and can't think of why I would need Bluetooth connectivity.

btw, I finally figured out what was wrong with the Akasa NUC Case,... there's a rubber strip across the back of the case, that cushions the connectors from the mb,... all connectors fit, except for the power connector.,... and you must cutout a small square in order for the motherboard to seat properly.

Hi Legion

I see you had some trouble with the Akasa Newton case? I have been thinking about buying one, and it looks like you have resolved your issues. However, what do you think about the case? Temps etc.?

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Legion455 - 2013-08-26

The main 2 items with the Akasa, was, making the square cutout for the power connector so that the motherboard would seat properly,... and the antenna holes have a flat section,... which my antenna don't, so I had to take a 1/4" drill and run thru the antenna holes.

I like the Akasa's smaller size,.. and the temps are running 50-60c.
last 2 items are fitting the internal rc6 ir board and making a hole in the case for the ir., and seeing if I can dissipate some of the heat from the msata and the wireless.
but I think the thermal pads from Frozencpu should do the trick.. ( I bought some, so when I get them, ... I'll make a post. looks like the pads need to be about 10mm thick in order to push against both the msata board and the case cover)

I think the main reason they are getting hot is from the CPU on the other side of the board. The mSATA doesn't produce much of it's own heat, the WiFi does produce some. I think that just the cooling by passive convection explains the drop in temperatures that I've seen.

Also mounting the case vertically seems to help the case to cool better. I've seen numbers from Tranquil PC that show the same thing with their fanless NUC case.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Legion455 - 2013-08-26

I just received my rc6 internal IR board from Inteset, so I thought I'd show a few photos.
The Akasa case is from Frozen CPU.

The IR board was installed with some dbl-sided tape.

Now all I have to do is install the simerec board when it comes it!

Nice one Legion! Perhaps you should do the mod service lol!

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC possibilities - Legion455 - 2013-08-27

I could do it ... Wink I've built "alot" of PCs in my day ...

go to my webpage, .. then scroll down to the bottom of the page to find 2 videos of a company I owned back in late 80's!!

those pc's weren't as powerful, yet weighed maybe 60 pounds!!! Smile
