New HTPC Build - What Do You Think? - rampsputant - 2012-10-24

Hey Folks,

After a year of studying and reading these forums, I'm finally putting together my first HTPC. I've assembled a lot of PCs over the years - mainly for gaming - but this will be my first HTPC. I intend to use this primarily for watching DVDs, streaming Hulu, HBO Go, iTunes and Amazon rentals, etc. I may also do some light gaming with it (emulators, racing games, etc) but I'm not going to be playing any graphics-intensive shooters on it. I'd like it to be small-ish, quiet, and power-friendly. I'd love to have your thoughts and input. I'm trying to balance performance, price, noise, electricity consumption, and flexibility.

CPU/GPU: AMD A8-5500 $105
MOBO: MSI FM2 A75 $70
Case: Silverstone Micro-ATX $60
Power Supply: Antec Earthwatts Green 380W $52
Case Fan: Enermax 80mm $8
RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 $40
SSD: Kingston 120 GB $85
HDD: WD Green 1 TB $80
Blu-Ray Drive: LineOn BD-ROM $55

I plan on pairing this with my current Home Theater equipment:
Sony 32" LCD Bravia TV (720p only right now - still trying to talk my way into an upgrade on this with the wife. Our TV room is pretty small, about 10x10)
Sony DAV-TZ140 Home Theater System

I look forward to your input and recommendations!

Upgrade that TV, I have a 47" LG that I think is a bit small in a room 10'x14' and looking to upgrade to a 55".

Thanks for the tip re: the PSU. Think I'll wait until everything gets here and see if I can get it to fit.

You'll have a good chance that it will fit fine....

The Antec PSU is not ideal for the ML03 case, although plenty of people use it ok, due to the position of the fan and the ventilation. The BeQuiet Pure Power L7 or the Silverstone Strider ST40F-ES are ideal as they have a bottom mounted fan that aligns with the case ventilation and further venting at the rear.

I preferred Antec ventilation facing the rear than PSU with fan facing the floor.....to me, it is odd that ML03 case is designed with the ventiliation on the bottom of the case......

The PSU's i mentioned will suck cool air in from underneath the case and exhaust the warmed air out the back whereas the Antec PSU will suck warm/hot air in from within the case and exhaust out the back.

I think I prefer the former method but having said that there can't be much in it.
