looking for a second system solution - rtate - 2012-11-27

I have a very good htpc for my home theater and I'm looking for a second system solution.
I want to get either an ATV or Pivos but have read good and bad about both.
My needs are fairly simple, I want to run XBMC/Navi to watch movies and tv shows on a wired connection.
I want it to play 1080p without buffering or studdering and be easy to navigate for the wife.

If you were going to buy, which would it be and why ?
ATV/ATV2 or Pivos w/ linux

RE: looking for a second system solution - fvtalon - 2012-11-27

I have an ATV2, running confluence it works really quite well up to 720p. 1080p it's not designed to do from stock and it really struggles with in XBMC. Pivos would be my choice based on being newer/more powerful and also available for $80-$100 vs ~$200 that the ATV2 commands currently in the used market. That said the Pivos isn't without problems either, but it sounds like it runs pretty good on a linux port.

With a little more budget I'd be inclined to build a mITX HTPC in a nice small case and running a G5xx or G6xx intel chip and OpenElec. $350 maybe with IR and remote, but also very capable.

Dougie, are you selling this one on your site yet?

RE: looking for a second system solution - rtate - 2012-11-28

so far the Pivos seems to have the most processing power and used with linux it seems to get good reviews.
I think I might give this a shot.
The ability to boot right to xbmc would be appealing to the wife...

I just got the new E-i3 cases this week for making little streamer boxes like these. I've got a little more testing to do and then they'll be up on the site, probably within the next day or two.

I can't tell you how excited I am about this! Big Grin (Not sure why I get so excited everytime these get smaller but I do!)

RE: looking for a second system solution - mprassel - 2012-11-28

It looks like a sweet machine for a streamer. Definitely keep us posted.

I'm in the same boat. Almost went for the Pivos deal on Monday for $80 but was compelled to wait for the Ouya. I'm in no rush.

The specs on the Ouya look great for a price similar to Pivos. I understand it'll take some time to get XBMC compatible with the Ouya's SoC, but can anyone comment on it's potential?

Nice. It's great to see these Sandy Bridge mobile based desktops. That's a great price for everything included.

AFAIK though, it's the HD 2000 GPU like all Celeron mobile processors. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Celeron-887-Notebook-Processor.77901.0.html. HD 2000 works great too.

That says up to HD2000. I dunno which the current available models ship with. I really wanna order one just to play with.

RE: looking for a second system solution - IsleOfMan - 2012-11-29

Would an Atom D2500 w/ GMA3600 do the trick? If so, any of these bare bones systems plus a 2gb stick of ram ($10, just watch for 204 vs. 240 pin) should do the trick. They all have lukewarm reviews, but most are regarding the lack of WinXP and/or Win7 64bit drivers for GMA3600. I don't think you'll have much luck with any of these on any Linux build, though... but if you're willing to use 32bit Win7, you should be good to go.

Along a similar line but OpenElec Friendly, this E350 based bare-bones should do the trick as well...

RE: looking for a second system solution - Dougie Fresh - 2012-11-29

When I test it, I found the D2700 stuff to be ok for mom & dad's surfing PC but for HTPC usage it wasn't great. It felt slower than the previous generation D525 when navigating around in Windows.
