Big deal for PVR branch: uPnP distribution of live TV - nchall - 2012-12-05

Wonder if XBMC can adopt the DRM stack they refer to in the PR.

That is a nice feature and a huge endorsement for the HDHomeRun Prime. I hope it also comes to the HDHomeRun Dual.

It may not be significant to XBMC since it can already stream from the HDHomeRun (not sure about prime). But for those with general upnp devices, it's pretty awesome.

If it can stream premium channels to any uPnP receiver I think it is a big deal. You could attach cheap Android sticks to every TV in your house as an extender and use the much better XBMC interface and skins instead of the box provided by your cable company. I realize there is some work to do on the DRM path in XBMC, but fingers crossed!

It will likely be a lot easier to set up than the existing HDHomeRun protocol, which pretty much requires making STRM files. I can't wait to try this out.

I don't get it, is that a DRM protected stream ?
Aren't the clients need to support or to be qualified to play a stream from a DRM protected source ?
or any upnp ready device will be able to play the stream ?

Not clear to me either. My guess is that it is encrypted, but not "copy once," so not HBO or the like. I think any uPnP receiver can play the streams such as the one in the video, but to play copy once channels they will have to implement the DTCP-IP DRM stack. At least that's my understanding.
