RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - M4tt0 - 2014-09-04

Chaps, I'm experiencing crashes with the testing system as soon as I activate VAAPI HW decoding. When I reboot the system I have to be quick enough to deactivate it again so that the crashes disappear. I just triggered another crash.

Here the logs:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/8233944/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/8233949/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/8233950/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/8233957/
http://paste.ubuntu.com/8233961/

I believe the crashes started when I was trying to fix the console screen resolution following this thread:
http://cosmicb.no/2013/12/25/ubuntu-13-10-console-resolution/

Tried to undo the changes, but not sure I fully succeeded. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Any help appreciated!

Cheers,

M4tt0

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - wsnipex - 2014-09-04

well, enabling a framebuffer device as in that blog post/thread definitely breaks vaapi, so make sure to undo them all. Take special care about grub.

And your log is not a Debug Log

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - M4tt0 - 2014-09-04

Thanks, wsnipex. I already undid the /etc/default/grub changes before. Now I removed the /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash file (containing FRAMEBUFFER=y) in addition. Running smoothly again with VAAPI since half an hour. No crash so far. Would not last a minute before.

Just let me add: The picture quality and deinterlacing is absolutely amazing compared to the Gotham-based OE I ran before! Feels like I'd bought a next-generation TV...

Again, thanks, guys!

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - c0mm0n - 2014-09-06

M4tt0 you're running the version from the PPA right ? I just install a ubuntu mini or something and install through PPA to test the latest vaapi builds right ?

Sorry for the naive questions, will find my way from your hint, have a nut i3 and chrome I'd be glad to preview what's coming for them. Thanks.

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - M4tt0 - 2014-09-06

Hey c0mm0n,

Same as on #hts? :-)

You are right. Just follow post #1 in this thread. Fritsch has laid out everything beautifully. I just kept stumbling over my own feet, so he and wsnipex had to essentially carry me over the line... ;-)

Have fun!

M4tt0

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - c0mm0n - 2014-09-06

Yes i'm the one from #hts, who are you there ?

Thanks for the hint, I'll give it a try. What hardware are you using ?

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - M4tt0 - 2014-09-07

Same as here. Reading more than writing... ;-)

Intel-NUC D54250WYK (HD 5000 graphics) with Harmony 650.

You got me horny with your "seem like I changed the TV" statement, will try asap on the i3/chromebox

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - M4tt0 - 2014-09-07

Updated to today's Kodi (14.0-ALPHA4 Git:4a33e3c) and experiencing regular crashes now watching Live-TV...

Here a typical crash log:

Please just let me know if you need others...

Best,

M4tt0

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - fritsch - 2014-09-07

Not a Debug Log you seem to run on a HD ready tv 25hz is not good for the content you watch.

Also install gdb so we can geht a Trace.

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - M4tt0 - 2014-09-07

OK, here another one with debugging enabled:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/8285040/

I have installed gdb now. Please just let me know what you want me to do with it if neccessary...

You are right. My TV is HD ready. Any advice on how I should change settings?

Thanks and best,

M4tt0

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - c0mm0n - 2014-09-08

Ok I got the PPA installed and running, but no TVH plugin, what’s the trick ? compile ?

edit : solved, just install from the xbmc ppa :
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc-pvr-tvheadend-hts
did a reboot, not sure if necessary, and works.

(or better compile adamsutton's version, see his github)

The first feedback is impressive (using settings recommenced and MC deinterlace). The Nuc barely goes above 5% on all 4 cores (playing a 1080i 7mb stream).

Should be a huge benefit on the chromebox.

What exactly are your video settings? Any overrides for particular channels?

RE: vaapi-sse4: Deinterlacing Testing - fritsch - 2014-09-08

Beside the crash: deinterlacing 50i content to 50 frames and then playing it on 25 Hz is insane. Switch resolution to 720p50 that should look, feel much better.
