Or perhaps less invasive: Add a Modeline to your xorg.conf - best the one, that you are using normally, so it can be picked up on resume.

Hi,

I'm after some help! i'm fairly convinced that i've followed the how-to to the letter but i'm still struggling to get video playback to work. The x264 videos start to play but it is incredibly jumpy and totally unwatchable. I'm very new to Linux/Ubuntu but i'm fairly sure it has something to do with the VDPAU due to vdpauinfo providing the following output:

ben@HTPC:~$ DISPLAY=:0 vdpauinfo
display: :0 screen: 0
Error creating VDPAU device: 23

Perhaps this is a driver issue?

The logs:
dmesg - http://paste.ubuntu.com/6808603/
XBMC log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/6808654/
Xorg log - http://paste.ubuntu.com/6808662/
MESA - http://paste.ubuntu.com/6808667/

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ben

Update xbmc. Did you add any other ppas?

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - bdcobley - 2014-01-24

No, the only ppas are from the how-to and i've done the 'apt-get update' & 'apt-upgrade' yesterday. I'll try it again once I get home but I don't think that's the issue.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-01-24

The xbmc version is 3 days old, there were some fixes concerning surface mapping (or better said, a revert).

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-01-24

Quote:ben@HTPC:~$ DISPLAY=:0 vdpauinfo

This howto assumes you are running with "xbmc" as user name.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - ToniCipriani - 2014-01-25

Anyone having problems resuming from suspend? Can't seem to get it working with the mainline kernel, all I get is a frozen text cursor, can't even get to a terminal to dump a log. Suspend works perfectly fine with the stock 3.11 kernel in Lubuntu 13.10., but seems like 3.13 is a requirement for VDPAU to work?

I came across this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1204339

Not sure if related, though I have a Radeon 4550.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-01-25

You are only a matter of a reboot a way to try it out yourself:

You will have:
- No hd audio support
- No default DPM support (not an issue)
- No Audio xrandr support (not an issue)
- On newer graphic cards you will have you will see artifacts (not an issue for you)

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - ToniCipriani - 2014-01-25

Ah, no wonder I couldn't tell a difference, I don't have a sound system, just a 2.1 soundbar.

Thanks. I'll stick with 3.11 for now. Much needed the new version fix for the Samba problem, though quite a few of my plugins are broken.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - jatho - 2014-01-25

So I finally took the time to reinstall / reconfigure my AMD E-350 platform following this howto and its back to working perfectly again with smooth 1080 playback, thanks fritsch for this howto, instructions are clear and easy to follow.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - gfisher - 2014-01-25

@fritsch

Can you give me some clues? I am trying to kill the minor skips on higher frame-rate vids.

I tried the Openelec Gotham nighly released 2 hours ago in the dev. forum
http://openelec.tv/forum/20-development-discussion/67846-xbmc-gotham-generic-nightly-builds?start=330#96248
vs. the OP guide here.

I have 3 installs:

1) OE: Openelec has near perfect 1080i 59.94 playback: Very RARE skips, almost 60fps all the time, once in a while 59.94.
2) Ubuntu Minimal OP guide: The OP guide Ubuntu minimal installed- nothing extra installed- from last night has the skips repeating, ~1-3 seconds and the OSD fps has 57-58 sometimes, when it skips.
3) Xubuntu13.10-64 full desktop. Xubuntu does the same, as minimal.

I undertand that Openelec is not *ubuntu based. Openelec plays about as good as 7750 on windows. Rare skips once the vid starts..
Should I start monitoring things like top... Or anything else, to try to eliminate this..
I am booting from USB for 1) and 2). So that I can test either install quickly. Xubuntu is on the HD.

Here is the OE log:
xbmc.log: http://pastebin.com/F0Y1waLT

Here is the OP minimal log:
http://pastebin.com/gsSVdeSZ

Multibooting OE is an option. But I think it is nice to try to get the desktop playing the same.. Wink

One clue is HPET=off, helps ~50%.
But not 100%. (I tried removing nice -1, no change)

TIA

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-01-25

First of all OE has the absolute same xbmc code. It is mainline xbmc + fernetmenta patch.

It uses 3.13 kernel.

It uses mesa 10.1 stable + the deinterlacing patch. <- that's a difference

It has xserver-xorg 1.15 <- this is a big difference

Basically, everything I pushed to OE I have tested in this howto before :-)

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - gfisher - 2014-01-25

I have been watching your dev work on that thread.. I figure you know best. Wink
I thought this op guide had the same temporal deint patch and 10.1 mesa.
I will look at the xserver. I tried an older OE nightly with mesa 10.01 (still on another USB stick) and it also plays very well. I appreciate the info. I will look into this xserver upgrading.

RE: Radeon OSS with vdpau (howto) - fritsch - 2014-01-25

Nope, we are currently shipping a mesa git snapshot. Check your xbmc.log:

Minimal:

(2014-01-23, 09:52)fritsch Wrote: @jaymax: Besides that it's still full of deinterlacing errors, It seems vdpau does not like your system :-)

Please whipe your .xbmc directory, don't install that "trackt" thing for now and get me a clean logfile when doing playback of

a) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55728161/clannad.mkv (has no sound)

and b) https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/55728161/fail.flac

Only redo the settings the howto wants.

Sorry for the delayed response. Here's the logs for the two playbacks:
