RE: OpenELEC Testbuilds for RaspberryPi Part 2 - Milhouse - 2013-12-28

Could I suggest that the USB2 vs USB3 discussion (and maybe also SD card performance) be split off into a separate thread as, interesting as it is, it really has little to do with OpenELEC (other than better/worse performance) or any of the other builds. Or even XBMC for that matter. Thank you. Smile

I believe that is just a harmless warning, reminding the maintainers which packages have not been updated yet.

I'm getting that a lot - I backed up guisettings.xml to the desktop and copy it back over whenever it screws up.

Edit: What is the easiest way to back up my USB in Windows without making an image of the drive?

I usually just use openELEC settings and make a automatic tar backup. After its done I copy it to another secure place. (PC via samba) Should I break STORAGE somehow, I format it boot openELEC copy .tar file back to RPi, do a restore from openELEC settings.

Its already included in your image, look in /usr/share/xbmc/system/ this advancedsettings.xml is trimmed for the release and is loaded before the /userdata/ advancedsettings.xml file. Any changes to existing settings or adding of settings is loaded afterwards and will be appended or changed to the value set in the /userdata/ file.

Rbej has a very few extra options you probably want to set but otherwise I recommend don't create it if you do not need it, again one is already provided. Check your logfile to help see how it works.

MashUp has the option to add Tuxens advancedsetting along with Mikey1234 and 0 cache advancesetting.xml. I'm currently using Rbej's, but i've tried the other 3 as well.
I can't notice any difference . Currently I'm on Rbej's build (Frodo) using his advancesettings.xml. Just trying to improve as much as I can Smile

Thank you !

WTF sorry how did "my" 1 year old settings end up in that crap addon. Sad
Goddamn crap site (not this but where it came from)
Don't use it, its very old and not valid. And I will take action to get it removed or at least my name and any reference to it, cheeky bastards.
I went ahead and deleted advancesettings.xml . I know, your advancesettings and Mikey1234 were old.

Sounds like you deleted the #else case too. You want that to remain. Simplest change is:
https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/blob/master/xbmc/cores/playercorefactory/PlayerCoreConfig.h#L91

#if defined(HAS_OMXPLAYER)
change to
#if defined(HAS_OMXPLAYERx)

Seems to be as relevant to OE/XBMC as ext4 vs f2fs (which is also only about better/worse performance) but I think I've shown that a decent SD card is likely to be faster than a USB2 stick for writing and not far behind for reading, whilst a USB3 stick is likely to be significantly faster than the SD card for reading but about equal for writing, so I hope that will help users avoid wasting money buying things that aren't going to help them and I'm happy to leave it at that Smile

MilhouseVH,

I've been poking around this bug (https streams hang) for some weeks:
http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/14674

I seem to have a solution, and it's been committed to OpenELEC:
https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/commit/c7f2bb44104f5bf07aeb759b2d3fa441b3fe77a0

Might be worth getting this out for testing.

I think the discussion has merit, both in terms of OpenELEC, XBMC and also the Raspberry Pi generally, but probably not within the context of this thread which is about testing OpenELEC builds. Also, these types of discussions can sometimes get a bit out of hand depending on which "side" you're on, so if it were possible to split the storage discussion off somewhere else it would help improve the signal-to-noise ratio of this thread. Maybe once a conclusion is reached the salient points can be dropped back into this thread. Smile

I'll give it a go, though it might be something of a Frankenbuild given the state of openelec.tv infrastructure right now (up and down like the proverbial drawers) - probably going to be tip of xbmc master, but openelec master as it was on 24 December.

If you read my first and last posts I agree.. I'm not going to discuss *nix drivers and drive performance although openELEC is built from archlinux. Its more a technical question between that and the storage media and interface.

I was just pointing out that I get the same numbers as f2fs with another storage media since conversation seemed to go that way. I'm not interested in discussing it further really. Not here.. Well not anywhere really.. I'm secure.

So no worries.. Smile

RE: OpenELEC Testbuilds for RaspberryPi Part 2 - Milhouse - 2013-12-29

New OpenELEC Gotham build: #2912 (obsolete)

NOTE: This build will upgrade your Music database to MyMusic43!

Code:
rpi512:~ # uname -a
Linux rpi512 3.12.6 #1 PREEMPT Sun Dec 29 00:29:19 GMT 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux
rpi512:~ # vcgencmd version
Dec  2 2013 20:30:23
Copyright (c) 2012 Broadcom
version 0334d765c5cb144589b4d7a4ac68ae8f136491e1 (clean) (release)
rpi512:~ # lsb_release
OpenELEC_Gotham (Milhouse) - Version: devel-20131229001712-r16733-gb4349f9

Based on tip of XBMC master (a59f822e2b) and tip of OpenELEC master (b4349f977f) with the following modifications:
  • Includes these newclock3 commits (except for eabf8af which I've replaced with a static spinner)
  • Excludes the fernetmenta patches (due to conflict)

OpenELEC master already includes the curl SSL patch and the following confirms its presence in this build:

Before (20/12 build):
Code:
rpi512:~ # curl --version
curl 7.31.0 (armv6zk-openelec-linux-gnueabi) libcurl/7.31.0 GnuTLS/3.2.8 zlib/1.2.8 librtmp/2.3
Protocols: file ftp ftps gopher http https rtmp
Features: AsynchDNS IPv6 Largefile NTLM NTLM_WB SSL libz TLS-SRP

Now (29/12 build):
Code:
rpi512:~ # curl --version
curl 7.31.0 (armv6zk-openelec-linux-gnueabi) libcurl/7.31.0 OpenSSL/1.0.1e zlib/1.2.8 librtmp/2.3
Protocols: file ftp ftps gopher http https rtmp
Features: AsynchDNS IPv6 Largefile NTLM NTLM_WB SSL libz

No curl TLS support in this build. No idea how to test it myself though (thanks popcornmix). Smile

Well said doveman2, if you are trying filesystem though try fat32, funny enough it produces the same errors: guisetting.xml loss/corruption, unstableness, and seems to get slower with time. I know theres no file rights but maybe its not f2fs causing these bugs?

Feel free to use it if it helps you just know its very old Smile
I just do not want my nick associated with that site or in any Mikey1234 team addons. Because I'm not.
And it might possibly make things worse for users.

Sorry tuxen, I don't know what comment of mine you're replying to but I've never tried f2fs or reported any bugs related to it.

Sorry doveman2 wrong recipient. It didn't even belong here.
Man how embarrassing lol. Forget it and lets move on. Apologies..
