Code:
OpenELEC:~ # free -m
              total         used         free       shared      buffers
Mem:           373          350           23            0           42
-/+ buffers:                307           66
Swap:            0            0            0

When I talk about "free memory" I'm referring to the "-/+ buffers free" figure shown by the free command, which in your case is 66MB, so a lot lower than it would be with Frodo. This is the same as free+buffers from the "Mem" line above give or take a rounding difference, which should also be the same as free+buff+cached as reported by top.

So what is the debug OSD showing with 296000/382000KB?

Out of the 384MB left after the GPU takes it's 128MB, about 100MB is needed to load SYSTEM into RAM, leaving 284MB so for there to be only 66MB left suggests that XBMC uses 218MB. I'm wondering if there's any real advantage loading SYSTEM into RAM now, as to be using 218MB suggests that XBMC is fully loaded into RAM anyway doesn't it?

RE: OpenELEC Testbuilds for RaspberryPi Part 2 - stuCONNERS - 2013-09-02

doesnt loading stuff into ram take 3 times as much ram, or is that just as a buffer?

Just the cachemembuffersize.

Thanks. I'd be interested to try that if anyone has a link for it.

It's more about the whole OS being loaded into RAM than just XBMC, but it appears that devtmpfs (which is the filesystem used to load SYSTEM into RAM) is being counted as cached memory.

Here's the memory stats from top in Gotham with/without SYSTEM in RAM:

Code:
ram:   Mem: 341232K used,  40772K free, 0K shrd, 29556K buff, 260228K cached => "free" 330556K
noram: Mem: 190200K used, 191804K free, 0K shrd, 28904K buff, 108376K cached => "free" 329084K

The total "free" (maybe I should refer to it as "available" or "nonbusy") memory is approximately the same in both, but although cached memory can normally be used by processes when required I'd be surprised if the large chunk consumed by SYSTEM can be reused in such a way, which may mean these "free" memory figures are somewhat distorted whenever SYSTEM is loaded into RAM - the 100MB chunk is a component of the "free" amount in the OSD (see also System Info -> Hardware) when it's almost certainly not free.

Of course the used memory is way higher when SYSTEM is loaded into RAM, but it's open to interpretation what the true amount of free memory actually is.

Guys,

am i supposed to be able to play m4v videos?
I just get the spinner, which after a while stops spinning and the systems freezes.
I have only one m4v file in my library, so I cannot tell if it is file specific, anyway this is the output of mediainfo:

one more question:
Did the way removable media get mounted change in the recent release?
If I wanted to have SYSTEM and Storage mounted at boot (assuming I am booting from NFS) what would be the recommended way? (mount in autostart?)

Thanks a lot

M

sorry, i realised too late I was not very clear.

I am booting over NFS, until few release ago the two partitions on the SD card (storage and System) were automatically mounted by openelec.
i seem to believe that now these two partitions, and possibly also other removable medias are not mounted automatically.

I can mount them through ssh but I was wondering what was the best way of having them mounted on every boot.
i remember in the past I used to have nfs shares mounted in the autostart file, so I was wondering if it was still recommended or if there was a better way of achieving this.

sorry for the confusion

Thanks

M

Yes, use autostart.sh if partitions are not mounting automatically.

m4v is just a container - you may be able to play it. They normally contain h264 which will play, but sometimes contain DRM (if bought from iTunes) which won't play.

This one is unusual - it is an mp42, which is an old non-standard microsoft variant of mpeg 4.

You can't play that on a Pi.

Aaargh, just when I thought I was settled on 3.1.7! Been waiting for DRC a long time: will try it out! (Also, I'm glad to see the pause-audio-sync issues have been addressed here!) Thanks! And thanks for still showing Frodo some love ;-)

Edit: Looks good! Had to set 'Volume Amplification' above zero to get volume control to work (DRC-related); and can confirm that sync issues are sorted! Nice!
