RE: Bay Trail-D motherboards - mpw1412 - 2014-07-08
Hi,
thanks for your answer.
I use a
- Pico PSU 90 Watt Power-Supply and had anotherone yet
- Western Digital 3 TB and tried another one aswell and replaced the sata cable, too
- DDR from an old laptop, which I tested with memtest several hours long
- a DVB-S2 Sat card with 4 tuners (VDR is the main application on that server)
The Gigabyte support told me to manually compile the lan driver r8168, as the one shipped with the kernel is known for freezes with many connections(I run a torrent client here). But this did not change anything and the devices still responses to pings after a freeze.
But all these hardware pieces worked perfectly together with a different mainboard I installed during the change of the mainboard by gigabyte which took more than two weeks and in all that time the server did not freeze once.
The only difference is, that the J1800N-D2H is fanless. But the little CPU fan did not cool the hdd at all in my setup. Do you use a fan? As the transformator is external with my PSU(like with laptops), there's not much heat in the case.
Which kernel do you use?

It is cheap I notice they have the same error on there main site it says j1800 quad core and in the description it says j1900. I'll see what comes tomorrow and let you know !
RE: Bay Trail-D motherboards - chippy - 2014-07-09
Just cant decide between Bay trail or a Am1 setup all i know is i want it to use low amount of watts. Duties will be Htpc movie player 24/7 Torrent machine but also Nzb duty as well but no games playing.
What do you think chaps

Just to confirm it is the MSI j1900 for £44.58 delivered to Argos I can't test it till the weekend but its deffinitly a good price
RE: Bay Trail-D motherboards - MediaPi - 2014-07-09
Holy mother of wow
this is big. thanks goujam. seriously this is a revolution. Even the dual core beats the N2820 NUC this quad core has just killed it. The difference in price is around £50 haha you could easily get a case for less than that.
Dougie tell me Im crazy but this is the go to board for price per porformance. I am sooo tempted its not even funny. I think I pull the trigger lol Goujam did you order from Ebay site. Im gobsmacked at the price
ARM boards are absolute for me now. I bet you cant even get a decent arm board for this price and this is about 5 leagues above it, in terms of speed and software ease
for my american brothers. this is inclusive of VAT (charged at 20%) take of VAT and it cost £37.15, convert to $ and you get $63.60.

That depends on your Preferences and your needs. AMD has AES, and a more powerful GPU,
but the Load Power Consumption is twice as high as Intel J1900.
What are you looking for? Idle Power Consumption?

Mediapi yeah I brought it from the scan eBay site. If your buying it with ram or something else and the price is £50 or above before vat you can get free home delivery from the scan website if you join avforums. I already had the memory so used the eBay site.

I think if you are running on an x86 platform then a USB IR receiver (either RC6 or FLIRC style) is likely to be your best bet. PCs don't have standardised GPIO interfaces (unlike the Raspberry Pi, Arduino etc.) - though you may find that there is a solution that uses LPT/Printer ports it won't be the same pinout as the Pi and I'm not sure how 'standard' the support will be. (And have no idea if your motherboard has a printer port or header) Or you may be very lucky and find that your motherboard has a CIR (Consumer IR) header.
If you are in the UK, Maplin do a £20 Media Centre remote : http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/windows-media-centre-remote-control-a49ha which works out of the box with OpenElec (and is full RC6) I run with a bunch of these - though the actual remotes aren't the longest lasting (but you can replace them with One For All or similar models). The receiver is a small, unobtrusive dongle, which some people have dismantled and mounted internally (with a hole drilled in a case) and connected using an internal USB header to USB adaptor like this ; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/380662654802?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0
FLIRC is a programmable USB IR receiver that appears to the machine it is connected to as a standard keyboard. It comes with Windows/OSX/Linux software that lets you program it to work with any regular consumer IR remote (and you can configure it on one machine and then plug it into another). This lets you repurpose an existing remote control and map every key in a customised manner. http://www.amazon.co.uk/FLIRC-Dongle-Media-Centre-Raspberry/dp/B00BB0ETW8
RE: Bay Trail-D motherboards - MediaPi - 2014-07-10
thanks goujam for confirming.
thanks alot for your explanation noggin. I'll do somemore research to see if its already been done on the MSi j1900i board. flirc is nice but I wanted it to work with the peripherals I alreadys have. im sure their must be a way. I remember JammyB (I think it was him) using a TSOP.... on his NUC

Well this is my needs Duties will be Htpc movie player 24/7 Torrent machine but also Nzb duty as well but no games playing.
The htpc i use at the moment is an amd A6-3500 FM1 with a tdp of 65 watts but i don't leave it on 24/7 because of cost so i wish to bring the cost down by going for lower watts which as you know means lower electric bills.
What i am really wondering is will the intel j1900 be able to handle what i want it to do, i have already brought a 120watt 19v power brick as i was going to use the Asrock DC jack instead of having to buy a pico psu.
Hope this gives an idea.
Thanks
