You add the extra box so it can be located somewhere else instead of under your TV posing as an HTPC so you don't have the noise!
More drives means more motors spinning and thus heat means more fan noise! Don't really want to hear that kicking in during a quiet bit of a movie!
Keep them separate. I can't distinguish between USB attached streaming and NAS streaming. I don't get lag and can happily jump about in a media file over network. It's great.
Server is under the stairs with all the AV kit. No noise for me!

Sorry dude, but it does look like someone got TrueHD to work. So I guess that's a yes.
On Another note, not sure if this was posted. But to get Win7 installed, here is the directions. You need bios version 21.
Windows 7, 64-bit versions:
1. Press F2 when prompted during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
2. On the Devices and Peripherals > USB menu, set USB3.0 (XHCI mode) support to Enable.
3. On the Devices and Peripherals > SATA menu, set Chipset SATA Mode to AHCI.
4. On the Boot > Boot Priority menu, in the Legacy Boot Priority pane, uncheck Legacy Boot to disable it.
5. On the Boot > Boot Configuration menu, in the UEFI Boot pane, set OS Selection to Windows 7.
6. Press F10 to save your changes and exit BIOS Setup.
7. Proceed with the installation of the operating system.

I believe Openelec uses 256-512 as long as you keeping it plain jane with small skins. I would think 2GB is fine, but remember the Intel graphics use shared memory.

I use a FLIRC currently for IR. I would really like to be able to turn on the system from S5 via IR but other then that everything works great.

Can anyone comment on the actual real power consumption of this in normal operation (eg running a 1080p video in xbmc?)
I have been looking at the Intel based STB in the other thread which boasts a tiny 5v 2a PSU which suggest draw is minimal on that so would be interested to hear what this actually draws.

Thank you for running the tests. From this we find that this chip is slightly faster than the Celeron 847 found in the DCCP847DYE NUC
Celeron 847 had a 2D Graphics Mark around 150.
The Celeron NUC was very popular on this forum before, so this does make an interesting alternative because of the in-built IR sensor. Also it uses less power.
2D 1080p playback, and 3D SBS obviously won't be a problem. Will have to wait and see if it can do Hi10P and Frame Packed 3D.
But maybe its not fast enough for Yadif SSE4 Deinterlacing

It will have one mSATA and one SATA. It's the same board that's in the Haswell models currently available, just in a taller case.

Found this badass review on the NUC units with fullsize mSATA ports and 15mm sata enclosure.

I was so excited about this I went home and lunch and tried it. I can confirm it does indeed work. I just spent a few minutes playing around in openelec. it worked perfectly. I played a few trailers (streaming online over wifi); great picture and sound quality. The system is surprisingly responsive!
