RE: Intel NUC - HTPC (Bay Trail/Silvermont 2013Q4 edition) - Archeob - 2014-01-31

I got this this NUC last week-end, having picked it up in Vermont because it's not available in Canada yet.

It initally played well enough (I'm a newbie to XBMC) but the bios is a mess. When you get in, the first thing it suggests is to update it over the internet, but when you click yes it send back an error saying there's an invalid board id or something. Not impressive.

I then upgraded to the new version, but since then I've lost the sound in Windows (says it can't recognize my tv's speakers) AND video had become extremely choppy in XBMC. I tried removing and reinstalling the drivers numerous times and there's been no improvement.

Does anyone know if it's safe to downgrade to the previous version?

Can this really be true?

I see they posted new video drivers for Windows 8. Anyone try them yet? HD-Audio fixed? Still waiting on Win 7 video drivers.

Clear Video is Intel's video "improvement" processing, not hardware acceleration.

I have a Sandy Bridge Celeron without Clear Video and it hardware decodes just fine.

I ordered it online from provantage like many others, but I had it delivered to a Kinek pickup point near the border. I was going there to hike anyways so it was a great deal. First time I arranged something like this but totally worth it.

Clear Video looks to be just post processing crap but what about Intel QuickSync?

QuickSync is their hardware accelerated encoder. I think they may have used the term to describe the decoder too, but that's still present even when a chip doesn't have "QuickSync" (encoding)

hey guys, are there any decent reviews already? i was just about to buy the old celeron for xbmc purposes. however, the new one has better specs... but what interests me the most is whether its the best choice after all?! i would sleep much better after ordering it, if this machine runs 1080p in several codecs and xbmc with highend skins without any compromise. apparently, the old one didn't, which was reason enough for me to think about getting the i3 ivy or even hashwell instead. then, today i found out about the new one. this changes everything, doesn't it? benchmarks? experiences? reviews?

I don't see why you would get the old celeron one when the new one is cheaper. I don't know about specific impressions, but there are lots of articles out there.

thanks for your answer. you are definitely right. that's actually what i thought. but still, i'd really like to have some experiences or reviews that proof me right in my decision to finally buy this thing. most of the articles i found are all about the specs, no real hands on and xbmc reviews so far.

Hi all, I managed to get some answers/sort-of answers to several questions:

"Does the graphics hardware contain the 23.976 fix in the Haswell NUCs? <== this one is the most asked.”
It should. The Bay Trail's GPU is based on Ivy Bridge, not Haswell (Haswell includes it) but the issue should have been resolved in the graphics driver. I'm trying to get a definitive answer on this one but this is what I have so far.

"It seems that CEC isn't supported on the other NUC's so far! Do you know anything about CEC support on this NUC?"
The Bay Trail NUC does not support HDMI CEC

"Will XBMC be able to stream and render 1080p content ?"
If the correct graphics driver is incorporated it should because the graphics in the Processor supports HDMI 1920 x1080 at 60P.

"Does Bay Trail model or Haswell based NUC have a built in support for HDMI-CEC?"
The Bay Trail NUC does not include the header, so no. Still waiting to hear on the Haswell models.

Still working on other answers.

Thanks.

Jason

I just posted this on the openelec thread here: http://openelec.tv/forum/64-installation/69105-so-does-any-one-have-the-bay-trail-nuc-dn2820fykh?start=45#96868

Just thought I'd add a data point. I got the DN2820FYKH yesterday and spent the night trying to get Windows 8.1 setup , failing in frustration. There are a lot of topics on the intel boards: communities.intel.com/community/tech/nuc with people complaining about hdmi audio not working in windows.

So I'm dual booting openelec now and besides the dual boot with syslinux it was a breeze. The system is playing everything I'm throwing at it without issues. It is a big improvement over the acer revo 1600 that its replacing.

So far I've tried:
mkv 720p/1080p
mkv 1080p dts-hd
mt2s truehd/dts hd losless samples
wtv 1080i (from wmc)

So far I'm impressed with the price ($134 nuc + $40 ram + $50 ssd) which is cheaper than the acer revo originally cost.

With Windows 8.1 I had no install issues at all. I didn't have HDMI audio after install, but disabling Legacy Boot in the BIOS fixed that. So far I've run Windows 8.0 and 8.1, Linux Mint, and Openelec. All work great...nice and smooth. The only issue I'm having is that I can't pair any Bluetooth devices in openelec, but I'm using a beta build.
