What defects exactly? The new BIOS, fixed a lot of them. Is anything left?

+1

Simply the fact that 2830 will be better and either priced similarly or the same.

I wasn't questioning 2820 vs. 2830 I was just asking:

What defects exactly does the 2820 has?

barely better, just adds quicksync really.

Why is it needed? Please someone explain to me

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC (Bay Trail 2013 edition - DN2820FYKH) - maddog808 - 2014-05-04

If the 2820 works, and it's available now for $135, why would somebody wait for the 2830?

Wouldn't it be safe to assume that the 2830 will have bugs to work out, like most new tech things do?

My opinion would be, if you need something now, and the 2820 fits the bill, why wait? Huh

Just my 2 cents...

If you run Windows (and poss other OSs?) Quicksync allows you to hardware accelerate H264 encoding and massively speed this up compared to CPU encoding (which on an Atom will be painful). Potentially very useful if you rip content and re-encode.

Thank you Noggin. That is a very good explanation of why someone would benefit from waiting for the 2830. Much better than just a blanket statement that we should wait. If we plan on using Openelec, there would be no reason to wait, right?

I have been following this thread for sometime now and it has been very helpful.
Unfortunatelly I have a problem and that is why Iam writing today.
I have a nuc 2820 running openelec (3.95.7) connected to a pioneer vsx 922 and i only get PCM signal.
My connection is NUC -> VSX 922 -> TV.
Has anyone had a similar problem and if so is there a solution to it??
Thank you
You're not specifying how you connect - SPDIF (optical/coaxial) or HDMI? And, did you activate passthrough and the appropriate supported audio formats in XBMC?

How are you connecting to your equipment? Your OS of flavour, UEFI/Legacy settings? And is this pertaining to any particular audio format, or all encoded (multichannel) audio?

Thank you for the help!! I hadn't activated passthrough and the audio formats!!!!

I'd still wait in case they release at the same price. Faster CPU, ram and quicksync - true not much though.

The CPU isn't a factor here... 2.41Ghz vs. 2.39Ghz.

I guess you have to weigh the fact that Intel has acknowledged issues in the 2820 (I'm just going by what's said on their forums) and will introduce a newer version, vs the fact that any new product may have bugs.

e.g. in my case, I'm in the planning stages, a few weeks delay won't affect me if its a better product. I don't even have any need for QuickSync. If when the time comes to buy, I can get the 2820 as well.

As far as I am aware all issues have been solved with the BIOS updates.
It is pretty good as far as I can tell.

AFAIK XBMC does not encode sooooooo, no need for that IMO.

RE: Intel NUC - HTPC (Bay Trail 2013 edition - DN2820FYKH) - MrCrispy - 2014-05-05

These are actually quite powerful pc's and can run Windows very well. You could use them as a general purpose pc, run XBMC, and encode in background also. Although most people run OpenElec as they are very well suited for that task.
