Guys you just need to enable the network discovery to get Vista working.

I'm using Vista Business and this worked fine for me.

Its under control panel, network and sharing center, network discovery.

I also have UAC turned off and Windows Firewall turned off.

Cheers

I'm using Vista Ultimate. These settings are not nearly enough. Thanks anyway.

it may be true that your using vista ultimate but if you read the entire thread you'd see that so far the only version of vista that can't be accessed is 6.00 a.k.a vitsa rtm, coincidentally its the only version that matters anymore because it ships soon

ccxgui - gidimille - 2006-12-05

Hi Guys

I have got a pc running windows Vista but each time I try yo use the smb feature of the XBMC to watch my movies i kept getting the username/password loop
so I downloaded ccxgui 4.1
which works fine it streams the video with out any problems
but the moment I reboot the PC xbmc says it cannot find any servers when I go to either the autodetect or xbmsp servers section . the only way I can get it to work is to uninstall ccxgui and then reinstall it
does any one have a work around this

Not only have I read the whole thread, but I am using vista ultimate build 6000 (RTM). Maybe you meant to say business referring to the other guy?Confused

Make sure when you install ccxgui, you unmark the small install option. Otherwise, just open up the program and stop and restart the service. Beyond that I don't have a clue.

i'm in the same position, cannot access anyfiles with xbmc in windows vista, i have RTM6000 and i've been trying to figure it out for a while... the smb share used to work with RC1 and almost any version of xbmc (from june+).... also if this is not possible without entering a username and password.... how do i do that in vista ?? (add username + pass)

i cannot check right now but i think i found the answer

quoting from http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about47756.html

"Also xeo wants to tell you double click "my computer" > tools > folder options > view > uncheck "use simple file file sharing..."
Make sure that all the PCs are under the same workgroup, gateway, mask..."

can someone confirm this,i cannot check it right now till night... :/

That people on that thread are using windows xp, and are having trouble connecting their pcs on their local networks. I can connect to my other pcs, no problem, it's just the communication between xbmc and vista 6000 that isn't working correctly.

SMB problems here too, biut I am on Linux ! - Eternity_rules - 2006-12-06

Have been using XBMC for 3 years now. Great program and love it !

The last year I have used a setup with a Linksys NSLU (rins a smaal Linus disto) with two USB harddisk that stream audio and video to the X-Box. Works like a charm. Rock solid!

I updated to XBMC v2 BLING and I am now no longer able to get the SMB working. The Xbox asks for login/pass. Tried everything (edited the xml, bookmarks, workgroup, made all ip's static, removens firewall setting from the router).... nothing works. I can see the disks with FTP protocol from XBMC, so ip's are not an issue.

Switched back to a 2005 XBMC version and with all parameters unchanged... it works again.

So, bottom line: XMBC v2.0 and v2.1 have an issue with SMB which is not restricted to VISTA users.

Would love to see this resolved!
