Would a NUC DN2820 be enough? - GSP-UFC - 2014-05-02
I've been thinking about getting a small pc for XBMC and putting Openelec on it for the following.
1080p movies (not 3d)
Music
browsing the web
Roms/Retro player...will the DN2820 be powerful enough to play games like NES,Genesis maybe up to PS1 or PS2?
I plan on installing a 1-2TB 2.5hard drive and putting my movies/games on that and using a usb stick for the OS. Does the Dn2820 have a m-sata port? would it speed things up by using it?
It will be my first XBMC machine and I would appreciate any help for a noob.

Movies, Music, and web browsing, sure. No problem. Emulation should be okay, but I'm not sure if you'll get up to PS1, and you certainly won't get up to PS2.
The mSATA port is occupied by a wifi card, and the way it's placed, I don't think you can really install an mSATA SSD in its place. I think tried, but couldn't really get it to fit comfortably because of the screw standoff for the half-length wifi card. In any case, the DN2820 supports standard 2.5" SSD's, which will be cheaper and easier to find.

It will most definitely emulate ps1.

Thanks, I don't have a NAS and won't be able to run a wired connection because of the apartment I'm in, would it be best to put in a SSD for the OS and use a USB 3.0 External Hard drive for my movies,music..ect?
BTW I've heard rumblings about problems powering off and on with the remote, is this an issue with the 2820?

Mine turns on and off with a remote just fine. The only issue I've ever had with remote functionality is that I have a Philips TV, which uses the same PowerToggle code as the NUC, so when on the TV, the NUC turns on and vice versa. It's kind of annoying, but not a big deal.
Personally, I think I would put a small SSD in and use an external hard drive. I have a 30gb SSD in mine, and still have about 12gb left after installing Windows 8. I run everything else off my NAS.

Both 10bit Movie and 10bit TV samples played without stutter with an average usage of 80% on CPU0 and CPU1.
Bluray Remux Sample 1 and 2 both played without stutter with an average usage of 25% on CPU0 and CPU1.
All samples had 1 drop frame.
All samples were streamed from a desktop PC running W7 over a 150 Mbps wireless connection.
