If your stuck on a black seobios screen with the following messge:
” booting from hard drive….
loading kernel failed: no such file or directory
boot:”
This is how I fixed it.

Windows users only (much harder to do on a Mac) use a friends computer if need be, that’s what I did.

1) I download the latest OS from Openelec (download the generic diskimage file), use 7zip to extract the file to your desktop.
2) Download Opensuse image writer software to write Openelec to a usb jump drive. (4 GB minimum)
3) I inserted the usb in my Asus Chromebox and turned on the power, before the black screen of death pops up, press the escape button… you will be taken back to Openelec setup, select your drive from the list and follow the rest of the installation.
That simple, hope this helps.

Enjoy

you managed to open a shell terminal on ChromeOS and run a few commands, but doing the same from your Mac was problematic? and I'm not sure I'd characterize installing an OS as a "fix" for a computer than doesn't boot any more than putting gas in a car that won't start.

I don't know what u are talking about. I followed the directions for the easy install. That didn't work. The shell terminal your talking about (black screen) was created using the script... furthermore, you we're the one that suggested downloading a new OS from Openelec's website. As for the Mac being problematic, I was referring to the writing of the image to usb disk, which I stand by is much more difficult to do on a Mac vs. Windows.
And finally, I was just chipping in my 2 cents in hopes this might save someone many hours of frustration. All is working well here now and that was my objective.

First of all, amazing job, Matt! The script worked great! Thank you so much for putting the time into building it! That said, I do have an issue I was hoping to get some help with.

I have an HP Celeron Chromebox running dual boot Ubuntu/Chrome OS. I've installed Kodi and I can play my ripped blu rays from my NAS in 1080p but only with PCM audio. I have an Onkyo TX-NR609 receiver that can play my blu rays on my Ouya (also with Kodi) with DTS audio. The Ouya can't play movies in TrueHD so I was hoping the Chromebook could do both DTS and TrueHD. So far it won't do either.

I'm using the HDMI Display/Audio from the Chromebox to my receiver and selecting the 5.1 HDMI output in Ubuntu's audio settings. I'm also selecting the same 5.1 HDMI output in Kodi. When I start a movie, it shows PCM.

I've tried searching the Ubuntu forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2225249) and using ALSA to try all of the sound cards/devices and none of them seem to matter. Every one shows PCM.
My main question is this: Is there an Ubuntu driver I need so that the Chromebox detects my receiver and therefore makes it an option in the Ubuntu audio settings as well as the Kodi settings?

Spent hours on this and I'm waving the white flag.

Thanks in advance!

I know you need to configure Ubuntu/Kodi to use ALSA instead of PulseAudio, but I'm unsure of the specifics, as I don't have a HDMI-capable receiver here to test on. If someone has a good link, I'll gladly add it to the wiki.

edit: searching this thread, someone said you don't need to uninstall pulseaudio, just install pavucontrol and configure it

I read a post recently from fritsch about Intel problems with some receivers. When I'm not on tapatalk I'll find the link

Yeah, it was something about an inability to stream PCM at 1080p refresh rates higher than 30Hz... I think. Although it didn't turn out to be the poster's issue.

I was remembering both. :-) Don't seem to have this issue with my Marantz NR1605, however (Marantz is owned by Denon and their products share many similarities).

Thanks for your patience Matt

So, current situation is:
- I have your latest firmware.
- When boot, goes directly into a black screen
- Tried 4 different USBs, they all boot into a screen where I can select 2 options, I choose the first one, and then it goes into a black screen. Nothing happens.
- I can access the asus box from windows (\\ip.address) and via ssh (putty) using root/openelec as username/password
- I've tried to add the OpenELEC-Generic.x86_64-5.0.0.tar file into UPDATE folder and reboot. nothing happens

I would try creating the install media using the .tar download, rather than the image file. If that doesn't work, you can always try installing an older version first (eg, 4.2.1), or the manual install method. But I don't have an explanation as to why the media you've created this far isn't working - maybe someone on the OpenELEC IRC support channel might?

I've tried the .tar "create_installstick.exe" but using this, not even the first installation screen shows.
I've tried adding the "OpenELEC-Generic.x86_64-4.2.1.tar" to Update folder, but when I reboot, it goes again to a black screen.

Regarding the manual installation, I guess you are referring to this > http://wiki.openelec.tv/index.php/Live_Boot_%26_Manual_Installation
I was about to try this but I got blocked on the first task "fdisk -l" since there is no "fdisk" available:
-sh: fdisk: not found

I also don't have "apt-get" available under OpenELEC

I ran out of things to try. Can I erase some partitions? It seems that I have a lot of temp partitions

RE: Asus/HP/Acer/Dell ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC/Linux+Kodi) [v3.7 - 2015/01/03] - jtadeia - 2015-01-06

Matt, The guys from OpenELEC IRC suggested to try my usb drive in my computer.
It boots and shows 5 options.
Not even the first times I was getting a boot screen I was getting 5 options, in Asus Chromebox I was able to see only 2 options.

It seems that there is something in the asus memory that is keeping me from boot properly.

Is there a way to delete everything without lose the ssh connection, the ssh connection is the only thing that is still giving a bit of hope.

Matt, you are amazing and after reading a lot, I'm in need of some help. I have an Asus Chromebox and had an internet issue during a dual install. Also my firmware back up usb was corrupted and when I follow the wiki I am not able to download the firmware back up image ((Asus) curl -L -o stock-firmware.rom https://db.tt/sLQL9i1p ) using the ChromiumOS prompt as directed. I have tried to use the recovery process, but I'm thinking my firmware is corrupted. When it boots, I can hit ESC and boot from my ChromiumOS usb, but if it goes to the internal drive, I get stuck at unpacking kernel. What I think I need is the firmware rom for my box. When I follow the wiki from the ChromiumOS prompt, my screen flashes a bunch of code and the stops.

Again, thank you for your great work and I will donate for sure if you can direct me though this mess. At one time I had Chrome and Unb running great, but wanted to try a diff setup and got into this mess.

Thanks for any direction.
