Most of the algorithms are closed source. So basically you can only compare the image quality of the resulting image for those. And you can compare the input they take. For example our VDPAU implementation for nvidia can do Motion and Spatial deinterlacing. E.g. compensating the motion and afterwards cleaning up spatial artifacts. It can take 3 past and 3 future frames into account.

Intels' MADI and Intel's MCDI only takes one forward field into account. But the vebox (internal hw since hsw) uses quite advanced algorithms to estimate motion and compensate it. When benchmarking against e.g. Yadif deinterlace from ffmpeg - you won't notice a difference to MCDI at all.

As I have seen so much foobar on this forum I am quite sure that there is a minority of people that understand what I am writing ...

Quality wise:

From left to right - basic -> advanced

Nvidia (VDPAU): Bob, Temporal, Temporal Spatial
AMD (VDPAU): Bob, Temporal (different implementation vs. Nvidia - uses a quite newish algorithm implemented ~2 years ago)
Intel (VAAPI): Bob, MADI, MCDI (works nice on BSW, HSW, BDW, SKL) - only poor Baytrail (BYT) needs to use Bob as it is too slow
AMD (fglrx): Nothing :-) - broken and beyond repair
Software: Bob (Render), Yadif (half), Yadif <- those latter two are called "Deinterlace" in kodi. Yadif has awesome quality but uses a lot CPU - if you use that on chromebox - one core is on 100% - but as MCDI has same image quality, it does not matter.

Didn't need to know absolute specifics, just following what you wrote in your EGL thread......something I'm sure Matt was well versed in......was pointing out that the screen shot didn't match what was recommended for HSW....

the screen shot does match - 'VAAPI - Motion Adaptive' = MADI (motion adaptive de-interlacing). If MCDI is preferred over MADI, then I will change the wiki and screenshot.

The chromebox, which is HSW can easily do MCDI - so yes - you can change that to MCDI. Though the difference between MCDI / MADI is minimal. MCDI causes the highest load for the GPU.

Hi Matt, can I just check a setting with you as I have a bit of an issue with "laggy" on screen menus that seems worse after the Chromebox has been woken from suspend mode.

System-->Settings-->Videos-->Acceleration: Allow hardware acceleration (VDPAU): Off <-The screenshot shows that as on, is that just showing the location of the setting or should it be on?

VDPAU should be off - to save us a bit of time when opening the decoders - as VDPAU is opened before VAAPI and obviously fails on intel. It does not harm, but it is not needed / used on intel gpus.

just checked and the screenshot shows it as off. It would have no effect either way since Intel GPUs don't use/support VDPAU. If your menus seem laggy, it's likely caused by a skin/addon etc that's not behaving.

Hi all,

As this is the most active Chromebox/Kodi thread I thought it'd be a good idea to ask here... Please let me know if I should've posted elsewhere?

I've just installed Kodibuntu, can anyone recommend any worthwhile performance enhancing improvements? I've seen HugeGreenBug has made several improvements to a custom iso here: https://www.distroshare.com/distros/get/62/
but I was reluctant to install this as it may now be out of date.

Any thought and input on this would be appreciated
