Sounds like an OS or Kodi issue, not really Chromebox specific. I'd start a new thread in the Linux support forum.

Well, it is fair to assume it is an Openelec issue. I haven't tried with other hardware, except the Win7 pc that was pulling NAS duty. I thought perhaps it was a bios thing (not recognizing the box was serving a file), but fair enough...I'll try and get an answer on the OE chat.

Nah, that's way too high level of an activity for firmware to play an active role. Firmware sets up the hardware, advertises resources and capabilities to the OS, and finds/runs the bootloader - that's pretty much it.

Not sure if I should post here or in the Linux - New Era: VAAPI with EGL interoperation thread since I've followed that how-to, but since I have an Asus Chromebox here goes...

The issue is this: After watching a while kswapd0 will start using 100 percent of the CPU and the frames will start dropping so rapidly that it makes videos unwatchable. A reboot will cure it until next time.

It doesn't seem to happen after a set number of minutes, it seems more like happening after more or less 1GB of video, but that number could be a coincidence.

Googling took me to the Arch forums and to a Launchpad bug report, but I don't know enough to see if these are relevant or not. If there's no fix, I hope there's a workaround because I don't really want to go back to Kodibuntu unless I have to (I had no issues there, though (once I upgraded the kernel to 3.18.4)).

it's a software/playback-related issue, the VAAPI thread is the correct place

Thanks. But it looks like fritsch just quit the forum and dev community. I posted it in case someone else steps up, but I'm tempted to just go back to Kodibuntu stable or maybe OpenELEC (despite inferior performance) since this is basically a dealbreaker bug.

how to you figure that you're getting inferior performance from OpenELEC? Milhouse's OpenELEC 7.0/Kodi 17 test builds have all the EGL stuff as well, since that is all part of Kodi 17.

And fritsch's OE 6.0.98 EGL build is still the best option for most users right now

So maybe someone here can help me out. I have an Asus ChromeBox running OpenELEC 5. I use WiFi and have advancedsettings.xml that use for MySQL and have all movies on my FreeNAS server. Whenever I upgrade this box to OpenELEC 6 it turns off the WiFi on boot. I have to turn it back on but then doesn't read the advancedsettings.xml. So when I reboot it turns off WiFi again. I have on systems on 6 that aren't Asus system and worked file. It's only this Asus ChromeBox. If I go back to OpenELEC 5 it works fine.

Ideas as to how to fix this?

it's a known OE6 issue which affects more than just the ChromeBox (some NUCs and others too): https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/issues/4333

unfortunately no determination as to what the problem is, otherwise I'd backport the fix and do a custom build.

I've never experienced turning on or rebooting a chromebox (6.0.98) and having wifi be turned off.

Edit: Thought I'd add some more info. My chromebox is Asus. I don't use MySQL or any databases besides local. I do have an advancedsettings but it again has nothing to do with databases, just a sorttoken in there.

It's an issue when using an external mysql database, it's unusable with WiFi in OE6

I bought an Asus Chromebox a LONG time ago and with Matt's awesome script, I configured it for a standalone OpenELEC install. It's been working perfectly for a year +/-. Now, I replaced this box with a Shield TV and plan on re-purposing the Chromebox. I have a spare 120 gig SATA SSD. I realize I can't install a 7mm SATA SSD into the Chromebox and must use a M.2 SSD but, a 120 gig M.2 SSD is about $80. Can I go buy a $10 USB 3.0 2.5" hard drive enclosure, put the SATA SSD in THAT and configure the Chromebox to boot from USB by default? (I don't want to have to hit some key at boot time and select the USB drive every time I turn it on.)

Also, is there a Linux disto that works best with the Chromebox or I can go with whatever I want? Will probably go with Mint.

Last note...... if I want to update the Coreboot firmware, should I boot from a live Linux distro and update before I do all this or is it safe to update the Coreboot BIOS afterwards? (I know, I know.....if it ain't broke, don't touch it.)

PS Just in case anyone asks, the 16GB of internal storage won't work for my re-purposing efforts. I need to have about 70-80 gigs of drive space and 120 gigs of storage will work perfectly.

GalliumOS - it's a Ubuntu derivative optimized for Haswell/Broadwell ChromeOS devices. Mint probably works fine too.

no difference if you update now from OE or Live Linux or full install later, but I'd wait a day or so as I'll be posting new firmware that fixes the long boot issue introduced in the 12/20 firmware.

Sorry, I was really tired and put the paranthesis in the wrong place. Kodibuntu stable is the one that has inferior performance, not OE.

My issue with OpenELEC is about preference, not quality: my Chromebox is really a home server first and HTPC second, and I need easy access to run Python virtualenvs etc. Basically I need a full distro, and since the same issue seems to be present on a similar Arch setup (per the link I posted), I'm stumped as to what to do (except wait until the dust's settled around Jarvis and hope that it will solve itself).

I'll go back to Kodibuntu with Isengard for the time being. That said, is there anyone else besides fritsch that would be interested in looking at the logs I posted? I don't know which dev does what.

Is it possible to 'quick switch' from openelec to chromeOS somehow?

ie without rebooting

For some strange reason my box won't boot on my new tv unless the HDMI cable is unplugged.

I have to wait til i hear the 'boot complete' beep before plugging in the cable - which makes it difficult to know when to select OS!
