What is the change log for 8/22 trying to decide if I should update. Thanks

so I am thinking about picking up one of these since it is on sale and I can get a $10 rebate.

I don't know much about how XBMC runs on this machine so I hope I can ask these questions although they may have already been asked before.

Does this passthrough HD audio ?

Is there any problems playing certain video files like there is on the Amazon fire tv ?

How does this compare to XBMC on the fire tv ?

RE: Asus/HP ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC or Ubuntu+XMBC) [v2.17 - 2014/08/22] - Stereodude - 2014-08-23

Yes it will pass through HD audio (in Linux / OpenELEC)

I presume you are referring to MPEG-2 and VC-1? AFAIK, it can hardware accelerate those.

It should be better than the FTV due to more powerful hardware and a native x86 environment which is the original environment for XBMC rather than a recent (relatively speaking) port to Android.

RE: Asus/HP ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC or Ubuntu+XMBC) [v2.17 - 2014/08/22] - Islander3153 - 2014-08-23

This is my first non windows xbmc system. For comparison purposes, current windows systems are a $1k tablet and $4 k computer; both very capable systems

The Asus CB at a fraction of those costs and power consumption runs xbmc butter smooth. Under the same network conditions I have no buffering at all which was an issue now and then on the windows install specially during the weekends.

Some BR rips the windows systems had issues playing even over ethernet play in the CB perfectly even over WI fi.

I know that you asked about comparison with ftv but obviously the windows systems described above are much more powerful than the ftv.

Code:
***Error in check_disks: could not repair filesystem, dropping to debug shell, try to run 'fsck' manually: ***
### Starting debugging shell... type exit to quit ###
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

I just reboot my system and had the same exact message. Anyone know what should I do to fix it? Thanks!

The ChromeBox, even with the celeron CPU, will play back any content that XBMC is capable of handling flawlessly, including Hi-10 and (h.264-encoded) 4K content. HD audio works perfectly, and it has none of the hardware-acceleration issues of the AFTV. It can't run Android apps (eg, Netflix) like the AFTV, but that's about the only "limitation."

assuming you have a standalone setup, run each of these two commands, hitting [enter] after each:
Code:
fsck /dev/sda1
fsck /dev/sda2

or for a dual boot setup:
Code:
fsck /dev/sda6
fsck /dev/sda7

after the file system check has finished, type reboot then [enter]

Thanks Matt! fsck /dev/sda7 did the trick! =)

RE: Asus/HP ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC or Ubuntu+XMBC) [v2.17 - 2014/08/22] - dchabby - 2014-08-24

hope someone can help me please

I am trying to do the standalone openelec install and get as far as creating the usb boot drive

I then go to the menu and enter 7 for reboot and then press enter

I am supposed to then press ESC at the boot menu prompt but I don't see that prompt after it reboots.

once I hit enter after entering 7 it just takes me to that screen where it says you can press 'space' to re=enable verification and then just goes to the login screen

not sure if I am missing something or not but I have no idea when to press ESC

edit - didn't realize I had to do step #5 before creating the openelec usb boot drive so did that and now got it installed !!

from ze script:

Quote:Creation of OpenELEC install media is complete.
Upon reboot, press [ESC] at the boot menu prompt, then select your USB/SD device from the list

If you have not already done so, run the Standalone Setup option before reboot.

Question regarding apps like netflix, I know this can't be run via OpenELEC but if one is to dualboot ChromeOS and OpenELEC will apps like Netflix work still in ChromeOS?
Second Question, is it possible to replace ChromeOS with a Windows installation? Ideally I would like to install Windows 8 and then XBMC, this would provide the all in one solution I'm looking for.

Everything on ChromeOS works normally in a dual boot setup, including Netflix.

Windows 8 will technically work, but is not without its issues. But really, if you want to run Windows, a NUC or Brix is a better option

Thanks Matt Devo! I've followed this post and have gotten my HP chromebox to boot linux distros.

However I do have another OS (QNX) that I would like to try installing on the box but this OS doesn't support the Lynx Point SATA controller. Is there a way for coreboot to put the SATA controller in legacy (IDE emulation) mode? I've had good luck doing that on other full blown systems and getting QNX to run.

This is my first time working with coreboot and from my googling I can't seem to find anything directly related to the chromebox/lynx point/legacy ata

Thanks again!

RE: Asus/HP ChromeBox EZ Setup (OpenELEC or Ubuntu+XMBC) [v2.17 - 2014/08/22] - dchabby - 2014-08-25

I seem to have a problem when putting the chromebox to sleep when using the standalone openelec.

when it wakes I do not get any audio and have to reboot.

anyone else with this problem ? is there a solution ?
