Got my Raspberri Pi 2 set-up to play with. First time with a Pi; it's an impressive, snappy little gadget for $70 (board + mSD card + power + case).

The only two things Q5 4K can't quite match Chromebox on are: (1) Proper 23.976 support, and (2) speed. But, when I was watching those two movies, I didn't notice any microstutters. And, while speed can't match Chromebox's, it's snappy enough. Nice to have just one (Kodi) box in my home theater now Smile. Unplugged my Mede8er 600X3D as well after 2 years as my 2D & especially 3D rips workhorse.

IS the PQ better than the Chromebox and PJ are you using in HomeTheater?

RE: New HiMedia Q5 - hdmkv - 2015-03-23

Close enough where I can't really tell on my 133" screen. I'm using a BenQ W1070 PJ. One of the movies I watched from start to finish this weekend was 'Foxcatcher'. It has many facial close-ups & I could make out all the details (pores, hair, etc.). Also, on my Q5, as I have all digital processing disabled, the PQ was film-like (you know, that just-enough amount of grain, details in the picture).

I have the same PJ and i have a feeling the picture quality on the VidOn is much better than Chromebox.

I still can figure out,how to get the Chromebox to play smoothly....(When watching a movie and the camera start panning building or people,it always get a little blurry, i have change the video from 23.98 24 29.98 to 60Hz still the same.

Did you notice anything like that?

RE: New HiMedia Q5 - hdmkv - 2015-03-23

VidOn better PQ than Chromebox? No Smile.

On your Chromebox's settings, make sure you have "Adjust display refresh rate to match video" enabled in Settings > Videos > Playback.

How does it play content smoothly if it doesn't have proper 24/1.001 support? You should see a duplicated frame every ~42 seconds.

RE: New HiMedia Q5 - hdmkv - 2015-03-24

In theory, yes. But, I'm not seeing them. Couple of other users here have reported this as well. On the Chinese version of the same box (slightly different hardware, firmware), I did notice the microstutters.

Then why do you say it doesn't do proper 24/1.001 playback? If it doesn't have a repeated frame every 1000 frames then it might just have proper playback.

RE: New HiMedia Q5 - hdmkv - 2015-03-24

Is 24/1.001 the same as 24 or 23.976? What I was saying is that Q5 has support 24.000, but not 23.976, but on latter, frame skips every 42 secs aren't noticeable (at least to some of us here). Some users may be more susceptible.

I also see no frame skips. How can this be if the box doesn't support 23,976?

it's big puzzle Huh
Q5 don't have official support for 23,976 ,from HiMedia:
Quote:23.987 still not supported. We pushed many times on HiSilicon company. But they still not give us exact date

But with motion bar test file i can NOT see any shutter, with film 1-4 shutter not always.

The same test file with amlogic s802 i see a shutter every 41 second (SPMC/dvdplayer).

23.976 is a rounded off representation of 24/1.001. The true framerate is 24/1.001. If you play 24/1.001 (23.976) content at 24Hz you will either get a duplicated frame every 1000 frames or you have to play it back slightly sped up which will cause audio sync problems if you're bitstreaming. If you decode the audio to LPCM you can keep the audio perfectly in sync with 24Hz playback of 24/1.001 (23.976) content. The problem with this has been the lack of an open source decoder for DTS-HD (MA). One now exists and is in the process of finding its way into various projects.

A buddy of mine has an early Samsung BD player that outputs 24Hz instead of 24/1.001 (23.976). The duplicated frame every 1000 frames is noticeable.

Best guess is they're playing it back at 24Hz by speeding up playback then. This should cause audio sync issues when bitstreaming, especially over the course of a 2 hour movie though.

Could be a right answer.
I didn't hear any audio sync issues,i will do more attention.
tThe problem also is that himedia player app don't have debug info like dvd player,so it's very hard to understand.
All test are personal impression, i try to compare with 1 year PCH a-400 usage.

RE: New HiMedia Q5 - hdmkv - 2015-03-24

I haven't noticed audio sync issues either, but need to watch/listen more critically.
