Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - VanillaXtract - 2014-12-21 I know fritsch has done one for AMD and Intel. I used to follow his guide for my gen1 ION except install nvidia-331 from x-swat along the way. Everything would work great. On my box, every few months I start getting input/output errors so I do a fresh install. I guess the nvidia drivers changed because about 200 packages install now, including pulseaudio and lightdm. Now I have issues with the HTPC booting to a login prompt. Sometimes when I Ctrl+Alt+F1 it will boot into Kodi. Long story short, is there a guide for a minimal install with ION/nvidia? Or a way to install nvidia drivers without the crap ton of extra drivers? RE: Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - fritsch - 2014-12-21 Try: sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends nvidia-331 <- no 344 version available? I will do that when I get home. When I had last installed 331 was the latest. With that said, I will give 344 a shot. I never bothered switching before since everything played with no problems. My system has an issue that after running like a top for a couple of months, I will start getting input/output errors when trying to use sudo and the file system goes into read only mode. The easiest way I have found to fix it was just to wipe and start fresh. You still recommend trusty and 3.16, correct? RE: Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - fritsch - 2014-12-21 For nvidia a simple trusty fully updated is enough. No need to bump the kernel. Also use the nvidia driver trusty lts ships. That's the safe side. Personally I did not have very good experience with the 331 series. RE: Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - VanillaXtract - 2014-12-21 I must be an idiot. I never thought to check if there was a built in driver for nvidia. And just stay with the shipped kernel? RE: Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - fritsch - 2014-12-21 Jo. fully update the system. RE: Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - VanillaXtract - 2014-12-22 Many thanks fritsch. I have 1.8 GB used. There seemed to be an issue when I was dinking around with the movie 9, but I think I have it worked out. Either way, I don't have logs to provide. Here is what I am running, which I believe is what you said to do. 14.04.1 3.13.0-43 Kodi RC 3 built-in nvidia driver RE: Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - z06gal - 2014-12-22 I use the xorg-edgers ppa without problems. I had 331 installed but had some issues with tearing so I upgraded to 346 beta and so far so good RE: Is there a minimal install guide for nVIDIA? - fritsch - 2014-12-22 I cannot suggest xorg-edgers, especially not for beginner users. It might break with every upgrade. |
