XBMC on Playstation 3 - AuXBoX - 2011-01-10

Has anyone had a a try at this with linux now that the ps3 is wide open for all this now?
This would be awsome having XBMC with the blu-ray player and also a gaming machine.

Would it also be easier to get blu-rays to play without the hassle that linux has, because it's a Sony product?

I dont think this is really going to be an issue any more. Is a port going to be needed?
I do not know how things work in system architecture etc, but the PS3 is going from console to (Enter your own answer here!).

XBMC has already been running on a PS3 (supposedly).

The version above is running in OtherOS Linux which was only really a Linux Emu, so it was buggy and very slooooow, but with the doors being smashed in and direct access to the hardware being available I reckon it wont be too long now...

It is only a guess that a gameconsole with 256MB of RAM would not be enough to run a mediacenter software like xbmc

It worked fine on the original xbox. Still does today. So dont see why there would be any problems with the PS3 if somebody did a proper port Smile

The Apple TV only has 256MB of RAM.

While I'd quite like to see a PS3 port myself, I honestly can't see it happening unless you get a group of skilled developers together who are prepared to put a lot of time and effort in to do it. It would not be an easy or quick job. The person to really pay attention to on hardware-orientated issues is poofyhairguy (he's not got the "resident hardware guru" tag for nothing!), and while he's acknowledged that it would probably be technically possible to get xbmc running to a usable standard, he's also pointed out just how much work that would take.

If you are someone who thinks that you could, and would llike to take on the task, then I guess somewhere to start might be the forum post that describes how the guy who made the video referenced above got XBMC to run:
http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=12075#axzz1AdU1vvZ5

he also set up a project page for XBMC on PS3
http://www.xbmc-ps3.net/index.php
but honestly, it's a total graveyard. Nothing's been posted since November, and the forum has a total of 11 posts since being set up in May

After the 360 came out the first thing I thought about was XBMC on it. Having it ported to all the consoles would be cool for sure, but after spending more time in this forum seeing the Devs aren't interested I don't blame them. They already stopped supporting the old xbox too.

We really need a XBMC on PS3 forum. That way the mods can move these threads into one area.

We only make a subforum if there is a port, there is none as of yet and as such no point in a subforum. Also, everything on PS3 atm is linux based, as such it should be in the linux subforum if anything.

And playback of HD sucks unless you have a CrystalHD card

With the PS3's GPU being based off the GeForce 7800, expect similar results, unless developers can get the Cell working at full potential

This has much less to do with RAM than the anemic 1GHz Pentium M processor and the 7300 GPU, since RAM load is <100% except in extreme circumstances. The CrystalHD card has a dedicated ASIC for decoding certain video codecs, thereby relieving the GPU from the task.
