For Live TV + DVR, you'll either need a HDHomeRun or Tablo tuner, both have add-ons for Kodi as well as apps for Android TV.

The Tablo has a built in DVR function, but is limited to OTA in the US and Canada. You won't be able to use it with cable/sat.

HDHomeRun tuners will require you to run a PVR backend or use their beta DVR feature. Also Plex has a new beta DVR feature for HDHomeRun tuners for their server, but that requires you be a Plex Pass member and although you can integrate PMS with Kodi via the PlexKodiConnect add-on, I'm not sure if it will work with the DVR feature.

EDIT: If you're wanting to use a USB tuner, then that is not supported on the Shield, but should be (as well as have a built in DVR feature) once Android 7.0 arrives.

Plex DVR is out right now as I don't want to spend that much as I don't feel there is a great benefit for it yet.

I run unRAID as my server and most of the linux options for PVR are available.

I guess I really want something that can look like WMC and have same recording capabilities. So something that offers the following -

Enable Timeshift

Group Recordings

Series Recording

New and rerun - Records all episodes of the selected show.
New only - Skips recording episodes marked as repeats in the EPG
Live only - Records the episode ONLY if marked as "live" in the EPG.

On the Fly recording

Support multiple HDHomerun tuners

The ones mentioned have been tvheadend, sagetv, DVBlink

Are there any settings I need to pay attention to with a 4k TV?

Such as the resolution setting on the Shield? By default it was 4k 60Hz, but I noticed if I change that to 1080p, Kodi will start in 1080p and then switch back to 2160p when I play a video (1080 or 720p video even) and stay at 2160p. Just wondering if there are any better settings I need to pay attention to in Kodi or on the Shield. I just updated to Krypton Beta 2. Thanks!

Seems someone has taken it upon themselves to remove my post which mainly focused upon the Shield required to be rebooted because it refused to connect to my Android Cell phone app used for remote control and the fact that KODI does not want to close quite often and because I am seeing many streams being dead or deliberately misdirected and that the Shield will not play any 1080p feeds and has become less responsive than my Raspberry PI and Win 7 KODI install.

This is the email I received:

Koying has just replied to a thread which you have subscribed to at Kodi Community Forum. This thread is titled NVIDIA Shield (Android TV set-top box).

Here is an excerpt of the message:

What "streams"?
The pirated ones we have nothing to do with and condemn?

If so, yes, please leave Kodi behind...... (visit the thread to read more..)
================================================

Thanks for nothing you sanctimonious self absorbed minion. I made NO MENTION OF ANY pirated streams. You made that assumption..

* Koying wonders if those guys are in denial or just think we are stupid... "many streams being dead or deliberately misdirected"... Must be legit, for sure...

I'm always eyeing up the SATV. I like the idea of an nvidia shield ATV + hdhomerun for dvr'ing TV. But for the price involved.. an Xbox one gets you pretty much there (minus the recording feature).

possibly they will reduce the price sometime if that new one gets announced.

Bought mine for 120 EUR, it was a pretty good deal imo. It was a deal from Amazon!

Just had a look at UK stockists. nVidia are showing out of stock on their online shop, and Amazon aren't selling it directly (only through 3rd party re-sellers who are marking up from £149 to £229) Is there a shortage, or is it EOL?

Remember the FCC thing? Wink

From what they told us they are trying to get there retail partners restocked. As far as I know it's not EOL, yet, and from what they said (and it was asked) I would only give it about a 20-25% chance that a new version would be released this year. Though I would put the chances higher for hearing about a new version at or around the time of CES 2017.

Yes, that was what was asked about and although they didn't say anything specific, with what they appeared to emphasize I wouldn't read too much into the FCC filing.

I suspect Koying may have advanced knowledge which he cannot disclose, and cannot disclose that he cannot disclose.

FCC Short term confidentiality is applicable only for 180 days maximum from the day of grant. If you look at nVIDIA's filing, you can see that they have requested the maximum 180 days for Internal, External, Test Set-up photos and User manual. They have until 13 Feb, 2017 to update/cancel this grant (you have to submit the request 7 days in advance of the termination date). In other words, by the end of Feb 2017 we will certainly know whether a new Shield will be released or not.

RE: NVIDIA Shield (Android TV set-top box) - grossbard - 2016-09-24

23.976 videos played with SPMC on the shield drop/skip frames every few minutes. 24.000 movies play with no dropped frames. Is this a known issue with the shield? I am on the lastest firmware.
